Dragons hasten trip to State 2B

They needed a running clock in the first quarter. Defending State 2B champion St. George’s suffocated the Tri-Cities Prep Jaguars early, rolling to a lopsided 65-30 victory in a regional game Friday night at Central Valley.

University turns to Kuiper to win regional matchup

The University boys basketball team had an inside-out approach Friday. And it’s opposite of what University usually tries to do, but it proved especially effective as the Titans pulled away from the Kennedy Catholic Lancers 68-59 in a 3A Regional game at Central Valley.

GSL games aid Shadle, U-Hi

They finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the always-tough Greater Spokane League, yet the University and Shadle Park boys basketball teams are on the brink of state berths. Victories on Friday will give them tickets to Tacoma.

Possible dream

When it comes to wrestling, Hudson Staub says he’s more brain than athlete. “I’m not the most athletic guy,” the Coeur d’Alene senior 182-pounder said. “I just mastered the cartwheel last year.”

T-wolves prevail

High school basketball games are decided by which team has the most points – not by how a team looks getting to the final margin. In that regard, the visiting Lake City Timberwolves found a way to withstand a furious rally by the Coeur d’Alene Vikings for a 52-50 victory in the 5A Region I boys basketball championship game played before an estimated crowd of 1,800 at Elmer Jordan Court.

Basketball teams get assignments

After all the district, bi-district, subregional or whatever you want to call postseason games, Washington high school boys and girls basketball teams have played to this point: We’re down to 192 teams. And after loser-out games in the regional rounds next weekend, that number will be cut in half with the winners advancing to the state championships in Spokane, Yakima and Tacoma.

Central Valley duo repeats

Perennial champs

TACOMA – Asking Deer Park coach Matt Jorgensen which State 2A wrestling championship he likes is akin to asking a mother which child she likes best. Jorgensen’s Stags captured their sixth title in seven years, and it came down to the final match.

Super Six lead NC to state title

TACOMA – The State 3A wrestling championship is staying in Spokane. Behind six wrestlers who each earned medals, North Central captured its first state championship Saturday during Mat Classic XXVI at the Tacoma Dome. The Indians’ previous best finish was third in 2010.

CV wrestlers send four to semifinals

TACOMA – For not having a holster full of bullets, the Central Valley wrestling team made the most of its available arsenal Friday during opening-round action at Mat Classic XXVI. All seven of Central Valley’s state qualifiers won at the Tacoma Dome.

Freeman sends three wrestlers to State 1A semifinals

TACOMA – The Freeman wrestling team, or at least its coach, has believed it has been overlooked this season. The Scotties advanced nine to state after winning league, district and subregional championships.

Coeur d’Alene leans on defense heading into State girls basketball

Coeur d’Alene girls basketball coach Dale Poffenroth has had some offensively blessed teams in his 10 years as head coach. Some of those teams could have won state tournaments without having to play much defense. That won’t be the case this week. The Vikings (20-2) open the State 5A tournament today at the Idaho Center in Nampa against Hillcrest (20-4) in the first game at 12:15 PST.

Harvey eyes prize

Tom Harvey is one of those wrestlers rich in skills and even richer in determination. In other words, the Mt. Spokane senior 220-pounder never runs out of fuel.

Mead gymnasts lower state expectations

The Mead gymnastics team, which captured a State 4A championship in 2012, heads to state expecting to challenge for a trophy. Another state title? Not yet, says Panthers coach Laurie Chadwick.

’Pups turn tables

A 4-minute, 18-second stretch in the fourth quarter spelled doom for the Central Valley boys basketball team. That’s how long the Bears went between baskets. More important, perhaps, were the four turnovers on consecutive possessions and the three missed free throws. And Central Valley took just one shot in that span, too.

Ferris avenges loss to Prep, claims District 8 4A title

Jensen Rye finally played to the full length of his 6-foot-9 body Saturday. The Ferris senior scored a game-high 19 points to go with two dunks and two assists as the visiting Saxons bounced back from a draining loss to Gonzaga Prep two days ago to capture the District 8 4A championship over the Bullpups, 55-54, in one of the more well-played boys basketball games this season.

G-Prep hosts District 8 4A title games

As it turned out, Gonzaga Prep’s tiny gymnasium will be the site tonight for the District 8 4A girls and boys basketball championship games. Fans would be advised to arrive early to get a seat. The gym has seating on just one side of the gym, so fans will have to be cozy.

Caudill an igniter

It’s easy for Mike Arte to find where 5-foot-6 point guard Hannah Caudill stacks up in his 26 years as Gonzaga Prep girls basketball head coach. “She’s by far the best on-ball defender I’ve ever had,” Arte said. “We teach kids defensively to level the player they’re defending. She does such a good job, keeping her hips square. She anticipates really well and has such good basketball instincts.”

CBBN replaces GSL as biggest

Vikings lay claim to regional crown

The Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston girls basketball teams have done this dance before. Except Wednesday, there was nothing light-on-your-toes about the 5A Region I championship game. No, it was a knock-down-drag-out bout between two heavyweight defensive teams with Coeur d’Alene going the distance to hold off the visiting Bengals 44-39.

Vikings rally in second half to defeat Post Falls

Coeur d’Alene girls basketball coach Dale Poffenroth had every reason to give one of those peel-the-paint-off-the-walls speeches at halftime Friday. He doesn’t do those for two reasons, though. First, he’s in his mid-60s and, second, today’s youth doesn’t respond well to those types of motivational tactics.
