GSL runners headed to Scotland

Three of the top runners in the Greater Spokane League will represent Team USA on Saturday at the 25th Edinburgh Cross Country race in Scotland. North Central senior Kai Wilmot and junior Tanner Anderson along with Mt. Spokane junior John Dressel were selected by the USATF to Team USA. They comprise half of the six-member team. Runners from California, Oregon and Oklahoma also were picked.

Reclassification puts GSL out of balance

The 2A Great Northern League is shrinking by two schools and the 1A Northeast A will have a net gain of one with eight schools when the next four-year classification cycle kicks in next fall in Washington, according to enrollment numbers released Wednesday by the WIAA. And the Greater Spokane League will tilt out of balance when University moves to 4A. The league will have six 4A schools and four 3A schools. Mead’s enrollment could have placed it in 3A, but it opted to remain in 4A. Gonzaga Prep, with 2A numbers, has also opted to play at the 4A level.

Vikings stave off Timberwolves

In a game that featured difficult stretches for both teams, the Coeur d'Alene Vikings had the most determination in the end. The Vikings overcame some frigid shooting from the free-throw line, especially late, to knock off the Lake City Timberwolves 58-54 in a hard-fought 5A Inland Empire League opener before a crowd of 1,700 Tuesday at LC.

The Lewis and Clark Tigers girls basketball team forced 15 turnovers in the first half against Central Valley. The Tigers didn’t get the pace to their liking, though, until the third quarter. When they did, they took control.

Backup QB Frazier hurt Eagles’ cause

It was less about the Eastern Washington University football team collapsing and more about an anonymous backup quarterback coming up clutch when it mattered most. Sophomore Connor Frazier, called upon in the second half to replace injured starter Peter Athens, isn’t the player anybody at Roos Field would have picked to be the difference-maker Saturday afternoon.

Kuna wins team title at Tri-State

Seven area athletes checked off one of their big goals for the season Saturday in the 42nd Tri-State wrestling tournament. Colton Orrino of Central Valley, Tate Orndorff of University, Izaec Quintanilla of North Central, Bryce Parson and Ryan Klemp of Lewiston, TJ Baun of Colville and Dalton Young of Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) each captured individual championships in action at North Idaho College’s Rolly Williams Court.

TACOMA – Lind-Ritzville/Sprague’s high-octane offense fired on the first play. After senior running back Connor O’Neill sprinted 69 yards to the end zone seconds into the State 2B football championship game, the Broncos’ were never able to break out of their stalls.

TACOMA – For Freeman, the second half was an exhibition of smash-mouth football on both sides of the line of scrimmage. The Scotties took control where it counts most and the Mount Baker Mountaineers didn’t have an answer.
