CdA cross country captures State crown again

For a second straight year the Coeur d’Alene girls cross country team dominated at the State 5A race. The Vikings pulled off a repeat in impressive fashion, placing four runners in the top eight on an uncharacteristically warm Saturday at Freeman Park in Idaho Falls.

GSL title should be Saxons’, not shared

By Greater Spokane League rule, the Shadle Park and Ferris football teams will be listed as the 2013 co-champions. It shouldn’t be that way, though. When two teams finish tied for first, a champion – singular – should be declared.

G-Prep powers past CV to earn playoff berth

In high school football, it often benefits a team if it has a short memory. A week after watching its chance at the Greater Spokane League title and a top postseason seed thwarted, Gonzaga Prep decided there was still much to play for Friday.

Lee fills in nicely for CdA in victory

With starting quarterback Gunnar Amos still recovering from a mild concussion, Coeur d’Alene turned to sophomore Austin Lee. All Lee did was put up Amos-like numbers in his first varsity start as the third-ranked Vikings secured the 5A Inland Empire League championship and the lone state berth Thursday with a 31-14 win over the visiting Post Falls Trojans.

Pick 6: It’s nip and tuck

I’ve waited eight weeks for this. There’s a new leader in the clubhouse. Although I was tied before, this is the first week that I’ve been the outright leader.

Shadle Park eyes first title since 1999

There’s no question what Ferris football coach Jim Sharkey wants this week. “We want the No. 1 (postseason) seed,” Sharkey said. “If we get a league championship that will just be a bonus. That’s not the most important thing.”

No. 1 seed at stake for Ferris

A look back at Friday night football

If you wanted the final week of regular-season play to mean something, you got exactly that in Greater Spokane League football. The league championship can be won outright or shared. There’s still some jockeying for postseason berths in 4A. And the third and final 3A berth will be determined.

Vikings stampede

When a football team has horses up front, it doesn’t matter much who is carrying or throwing the ball behind them. The Coeur d’Alene Vikings made that evident Friday as they exposed the Lake City Timberwolves where they were most vulnerable – up the middle.

Coleton Fitzgerald leads way as Lewis and Clark breezes by North Central 44-6

Facing the likelihood of its final opportunity for a win in the regular season, the Lewis and Clark football team played arguably its best game Thursday. Behind senior running back Coleton Fitzgerald, the Tigers sliced and diced their way through the mistake-prone North Central Indians 44-6 in a Greater Spokane League game between the city’s oldest schools at Joe Albi Stadium.

Ferris hits stride in win over U-Hi

With a week left in the regular season, the Ferris football team is playing like a well-oiled machine. The Saxons dominated the University Titans, forcing a running clock early in the second half in a 48-7 win in a Greater Spokane League game Thursday afternoon at Joe Albi Stadium.

Lee: Coaches accept good, bad when kids play sports

Eastern Washington University defensive coordinator John Graham has taken in three Cheney games this fall. It’s not that he has his eye on some prized recruit, but he does have a vested interest. Make that two vested interests – sons Andrew and Ty play for the Blackhawks.

No looking back for Mt. Spokane quarterback Stu Stiles

It was a small sample size considering his first two seasons ended abruptly with identical injuries, but Greater Spokane League football coaches didn’t need much evidence to know that Stu Stiles could play. That’s been proven this season.

Bears, Highlanders showdown here again

The last time they played it was an instant classic. Shadle Park quarterback Brett Rypien threw for an eye-popping 577 yards and yet the Highlanders fell to Central Valley in overtime last year because another mind-boggling feat took place – Bears placekicker Austin Rehkow converted on a 67-yard field goal.

It took a while for the Gonzaga Prep football team’s offense to get started Thursday against Rogers. Thankfully for the Bullpups in the first half, their special teams and defense were on task until the offense took over.

Lee: Coeur d’Alene football coach Shawn Amos reveals he’s battling cancer

Coeur d’Alene football coach Shawn Amos has faced several challenges in his life, especially in his coaching career. His early years at CdA, for example, were not memorable. It took him some time to get the program headed down the path to where it captured back-to-back state championships in 2010 and 2011.
