Fourth-down scoring pass lifts Gonzaga Prep over Ferris

Who would have thought that a Gonzaga Prep victory would come down to a pass play? Facing fourth-and-7 from the Ferris 17-yard line, quarterback Kevin Thomas was patient, let the play develop and found wingback Nick Wood on an out pattern. Wood caught it short of the goal line and did the rest, escaping a would-be tackler for the go-ahead touchdown.

Bullpups hang on to defeat Saxons

Who would have thought that a Gonzaga Prep victory would come down to a pass play? Facing fourth-and-7 from the Ferris 17-yard line, quarterback Kevin Thomas was patient, let the play develop and found wingback Nick Wood on an out pattern. Wood caught it short of the goal line and did the rest, escaping a would-be tackler for the go-ahead touchdown. Ferris got the ball back with 45 seconds and moved to the Bullpups 22 where with 4 seconds left a 39-yard field-goal attempt by Matt Beaulaurier fell short of the crossbar by 2 yards as time expired, giving the defending Greater Spokane League champions an invigorating 38-35 win Friday over the visiting Saxons.

Mt. Spokane goes to 3-0

It’s generally difficult to read Mt. Spokane football coach Mike McLaughlin’s face following a win or a loss. McLaughlin was his usual unflappable self Thursday but inside he was more than satisfied as his Wildcats knocked off slight preseason favorite Central Valley 35-16 in a Greater Spokane League game at Joe Albi Stadium.

Vikings QB Amos set sights on state title as child

It was the dream of a little boy at the time. Eight-year-old Gunnar Amos had a T-shirt on with a statement about the 2012 Vikings being state champs. He ran out on the field after a game – as was custom for him, his mom and sister to do – to give dad, CdA head football coach Shawn Amos, a hug – win or lose.

It’s time for WIAA to count students

We’ve reached the end of the current 4-year classification cycle in Washington. That means enrollment numbers submitted last spring and this fall will determine the state’s six classes for the next four years.

Ferris, G-Prep matchup will thrill

A third week in Greater Spokane League football is upon us and a third showdown looms. That’s the beauty of a league deep in quality. And for a third straight week, the Ferris Saxons (2-0) will be involved in the face-off when they visit the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups (2-0) on Friday. Kickoff is at 7.

Not eight DBs, but a one-of-a-kind D-line stopped Rypien

In the big picture, the Shadle Park football team is much improved over last year. The Highlanders’ defense can make stops. Disregard the final score of Ferris’ 38-14 win Thursday at Joe Albi Stadium. The game was much closer.

CdA gives up 2 INTs for TDs, loses 2 fumbles in defeat

Mistakes plagued the Coeur d’Alene Vikings from start to finish Friday. And the visiting Skyline Spartans of Sammamish capitalized on all of the Vikings’ miscues, the final one being an 84-yard interception return by Drew Lunde with 2:21 left as the two-time defending Washington 4A state football champs downed Coeur d’Alene 38-23.

Eight just enough

Ferris pulled out a game plan from the 2010 state championship football game Thursday. The Saxons used a three-man front and dropped eight into coverage to slow down the usually prolific Brett Rypien, Shadle Park’s junior quarterback.

Karstetters pride of Saxons

The Karstetter name is readily recognizable to those familiar with Greater Spokane League athletics and beyond. The last branch of the second generation in the Lilac City is Cole Karstetter.

Lee: Numbers game costs Greater Spokane League state berths

Eastern Washington 4A schools received an extra state berth in all sports this year, but if you’re a Greater Spokane League or Mid-Columbia Conference school there’s no reason to celebrate. The extra berth landed in the Big Nine Conference, which consists of five 4A schools like the GSL.

Offense on display with Shadle, Ferris

You can be sure the Shadle Park and Ferris football teams will combine for many yards of offense when the teams face off this week. You can be sure, though, the game will be decided by defense.

It’s early, but Friday told a tale

So what did we learn after the first week of Greater Spokane League football? A lot really. And not a lot, really, considering there are eight more weeks of league play.

Mead finishes U-Hi

What the Mead football team started two days earlier it finished Saturday. The Panthers, behind a balanced attack, used a 21-0 start on Thursday and extended it to a 42-14 win over the University Titans at Joe Albi Stadium.

Saxons electric

There’s no denying that speed in football is difficult to defend. Ferris’ speedy junior Jalen Hicks accentuated that Friday, especially in the second half.

Flashy start

The first night of Greater Spokane League football took a backseat to lightning. A severe weather cell moved into the Spokane area about 8:30, shortly after the second half began Thursday night. Eight minutes later, the game was suspended with Mead leading University 21-0 and 9:52 remaining in the third quarter.

Mt. Spokane QB Stu Stiles suspended for two games

After missing the majority of the past two seasons because of season-ending collarbone injuries, Mt. Spokane senior quarterback Stu Stiles must sit out the first two games of the season. Stiles was suspended Tuesday after he self-reported an athletic code violation.

Pick 6

When I started predicting high school football games at the newspaper 20 years ago, the format we used was yours truly taking on a guest picker each week. In a way we’ve come full circle. Beginning this week and through the playoffs it will be the Scribe against the Talking Head. That bald-headed mug attached to this feature belongs to KHQ/SWX sports director Sam Adams.

Post Falls can’t take advantage of chances in shutout loss

The Capital Eagles punished Post Falls through the air and on the ground as the Boise school throttled the Trojans 35-0 in a season football opener for both teams Friday. What made watching it transpire more difficult for the Trojans is they had opportunities in the first half to stay close to the visiting Eagles.

Idaho preps gear up for football openers

Preseason practice started on Aug. 12 for 11 North Idaho high school football teams, and they’ll measure their progress with season openers beginning tonight. CdA travels to the Portland area to face the West Linn Lions while LC goes to the Boise area to meet the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies.
