Karstetter’s show

Just call him Every-Down Karstetter. Ferris’ senior two-way standout Cole Karstetter rarely came off the field Friday, and that was a good thing for the Saxons.

2 Mead players commit

A pair of Mead girls basketball standouts who helped lead the Panthers to the State 4A championship last winter have made oral commitments. Delany Junkermier, a 6-foot shooting guard, is headed to Montana State, and Ashlyn Lewey, a 6-0 wing/forward, is going to Seattle University.

Gonzaga Prep rolls by NC

After surviving a mistake-filled game the week before, Gonzaga Prep came out firing, especially through the air, as the Bullpups overwhelmed the North Central Indians 49-14 in a Greater Spokane League game at Joe Albi Stadium on Thursday. G-Prep (5-1) sandwiched two touchdowns to start the game around NC’s lone first-half TD and then finished out the first half with four more TDs in the second quarter.

Shadle tops Mead for 1st time since ’04

The Shadle Park football team’s offense was productive as usual, but the defense stepped up in timely fashion Thursday night. Behind six sacks, one critical fumble recovery and an interception, the Highlanders stymied the Mead Panthers 33-7 in a Greater Spokane League game at Joe Albi Stadium.

Shadle Park’s receivers reap benefits of hard work

They’ve been largely unheralded because the kid throwing to them seemingly breaks another record every week. Shadle Park junior quarterback Brett Rypien isn’t gathering national recruiting interest by himself. He’s the first to admit it.

Pick 6: Prep football picks of the week

Perfection. For the first time this fall, one of the competitors in Pick 6 had a perfect week. You can probably guess it was Yours Truly. There wouldn’t be this run up had it been THE OTHER GUY.

Plenty of big games in area

Three of the four Greater Spokane League football teams tied for first with 4-1 records face key games this week. The first big game is Thursday when Shadle Park, one of the four in the logjam, takes on Mead (3-2). Kickoff is at 7:15 and is the second game of a doubleheader at Joe Albi Stadium.

Crisp fall error

Perhaps the Gonzaga Prep and Mead football teams still hadn’t shaken off upset losses to 3A teams the week before. That would be the nice way of saying both teams had stretches of hideous play, particularly on offense.

Central Valley revs it up, beats LC

It shouldn’t surprise anyone how well the Central Valley football team played Thursday. After all, the calendar just flipped to October and that’s usually when the Bears seemingly come out of hibernation and start rounding into form.

Shadle Park gets the nod in 3A battle

All of a sudden we’ve got a game. It took a daring move on my part – calling for Mt. Spokane to upset Mead – but The Scribe has pulled within a game of the Talking Head.

Wildcats, Highlanders square off

Week 5 in Greater Spokane League football will be similar to the first four weeks. That means there’s at least one potentially entertaining game. As it turns out there are two that jump off the schedule.

Kings of the North

The Mt. Spokane football team completed an improbable sweep by 3A teams over 4A teams Friday in an electrifying Greater Spokane League doubleheader at Joe Albi Stadium. And Mt. Spokane is the lone unbeaten team remaining after four weeks.

Mt. Spokane stands alone

Mt. Spokane is the lone unbeaten team remaining after four weeks of Greater Spokane League football. The Wildcats’ defense shut out the Mead Panthers 10-0 in the Battle of the Bell before a crowd of 10,202 on Friday night at Albi Staidum.

Lewis and Clark picks up first win

Andrew Black thought the difference was finishing. The Lewis and Clark senior quarterback was probably onto something, as the previously winless Tigers used their most complete offensive and defensive game to top the University Titans 35-7 in a Greater Spokane League football game Thursday at Joe Albi Stadium.

Lakeland’s Bayley commits to WSU golf

Lakeland standout golfer Derek Bayley has given an oral commitment to Washington State University. Bayley, a senior, took unofficial visits to Oregon, Oregon State, Washington, Arizona, Arizona State and Gonzaga.

Lee: Facelift would cure what ails Joe Albi

The Joe Albi Stadium you see today won’t be the Joe Albi Stadium of the future if the Spokane School District becomes the landlord. And that’s a good thing. The aging elephant needs some tender loving care or it should be put out to pasture.

Preps: Broncos look to repeat behind foursome of captains

RITZVILLE – If any team would have reason to be overconfident in trying to repeat as a state champion it would be the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague football team. The Broncos return the nucleus responsible for leading them to the State 2B title last fall. And in the center of that nucleus are four senior captains – quarterback Dylan Hartz, running back Connor O’Neill, tight end Ryan Whitmore, the son of head coach Greg Whitmore, and left tackle Tyler Frederick.

Coming up: Friday night at Albi a must-see

The Friday night doubleheader at Joe Albi Stadium is the best package in the first four weeks of the football season. How can you go wrong with Shadle Park (2-1) taking on Gonzaga Prep (3-0) at 5 and a district rivalry featuring Mead (3-0) going against Mt. Spokane (3-0) at 7:15?
