Before the college football coaching carousel starting turning, as it always does, Coeur d’Alene standout Chase Blakley was set on signing with the University of Washington. Then two coaching changes – Steve Sarkisian left UW for Southern California and Chris Peterson departed Boise State for UW – caused the tight end to take a second look.

With the Greater Spokane League championship secured, it’s time for the Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team to use the final three regular-season games to polish and fine tune for the postseason. The league title is the Bullpups’ second in four years and fifth overall.

Lake City takes a tumble with loss to Post Falls

The Lake City boys basketball team was out to clinch the top seed for the postseason and no worse than a share of the 5A Inland Empire League championship on Tuesday. Instead, the Timberwolves now could fall as far as third in the four-team league, and Post Falls now has a chance to capture the league title after the Trojans thumped visiting Lake City 63-45.

GSL boys: Ferris defeats Shadle Park

They should have refunded admission after the first quarter of the Greater Spokane League boys basketball game at Shadle Park. After 8 minutes, Ferris could only manage a 7-3 lead – this after Shadle Park made just 1 of 12 shots from the field.

Bill Bender was minding his business, enjoying retired life in Sandpoint from 41 years in education and coaching when his wife brought home an application for a coaching position two years ago. “She said I was spending too much time at home,” said Bender, whose wife owns an office supply business in Sandpoint.

Don’t look now but it appears the Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team is poised to move into overdrive with the postseason in sight. The Greater Spokane League-leading Bullpups played their best game to date Tuesday, dismantling the 2013 State 4A champion Mead Panthers 63-41.

Imagine Amos’ surprise when Petrino called him into his office and offered a chance to play quarterback.

Inspired by setbacks

Izaec Quintanilla had the option of dropping a weight class at the challenging Rumble tournament near Salt Lake City last weekend. By doing so, the North Central junior would have most likely kept his 60-match winning streak and undefeated record this season intact. Instead, he chose to compete at 160 pounds with a possible semifinal match against the defending Greco national champion.

A 31-year marriage will break up at the end of the school year. Tekoa and Oakesdale combined to field sports teams in 1984, but they’re divorcing after a highly successful relationship.

Gonzaga Prep boys basketball coach Matty McIntyre wasn’t in the locker room for long at Central Valley Tuesday when he cautioned his team. McIntyre reminded his players there’s a lot of season left, but to celebrate their 53-43 win over the Greater Spokane League-leading Central Valley Bears for a night.

The Coeur d’Alene girls basketball team is playing its best, and it started this week. Coeur d’Alene used its usual balanced scoring to pull away from visiting Lake City 59-29 in a 5A Inland Empire League game as part of the Fight for the Fish doubleheader Friday.

GSL girls: Mead utilizes height advantage in win over LC

For three quarters Friday, the Mead girls basketball team played as well as it has all season. Lewis and Clark cut into a 21-point deficit in the final period but it wasn’t enough as the visiting Panthers prevailed 77-65 in a Greater Spokane League game.

GSL landscape changing

Greater Spokane League principals voted unanimously Thursday to scrap their traditional football schedule and crown 4A and 3A champions. Beginning in the fall, the six 4A schools will play seven games against GSL teams while the four 3A schools will play six. That leaves 4A schools with two open dates and 3A schools with three. The schools can fill those dates with nonleague games or other crossover matchups against league teams.
