Last year was a disappointing season for North Central long-distance runner Keith Williams. He earned one medal at state and that was an eighth in the 800 meters. Williams didn’t throw the medal away, but it’s not front and center in his collection.

Central Valley girls track coach Geoff Arte lost a bet Thursday, and he’s more than happy to pay up. Bears sprinter/hurdler Rachel Backsen asked Arte if he’d run in the coaches’ 400-meter relay at the Mooberry Relays on Saturday if Central Valley beat undefeated Lewis and Clark.

Katie Knight enjoyed a recent week in Poland, coming away with a great appreciation for the country’s food among other things. The North Central standout runner earned the trip to compete in the IAAF Junior World cross country championships by placing fourth in the USAT Junior National championships Jan. 12 in St. Louis. The top six qualified for the trip.

The University of California women’s basketball team didn’t expect anything less than a tug-of-war Monday night. Earning its first trip to an NCAA Final Four couldn’t have been more difficult. And, in the end, more rewarding.

Idaho teams still waiting on new track

Two years ago when the final Idaho state high school track meets were held at Boise State University, fans were told that a new stadium being built by the school on 14 1/2 acres would be the ideal replacement. It would be more intimate than BSU’s 34,000-seat Bronco Stadium. The new facility, Dona Larsen Park, would seat about 5,000 and fans would be right on top of the action. BSU also built a softball park nearby.

Mead, G-Prep make volleyball hires

Elaina Renius knows the shoes she must fill are large. The Mead counselor is excited about the challenge, though. Renius, 26, has been named the Panthers’ volleyball coach. She replaces legendary Judy Kight, who retired from coaching late last fall.
