Leiss all but out as Vikings coach

Coeur d’Alene High’s administration has recommended not re-hiring boys basketball coach Kent Leiss. The on-again, off-again saga that began in late January concluded Thursday when Leiss was told by Principal Warren Olson and athletic director Todd Gilkey in a 1-hour meeting about the recommendation they will send to the school board. The recommendation will go before the board at a meeting April 8.

A single player couldn’t beat Mead’s balance – although it was tested to the fullest in the final minutes – as the No. 1-ranked Panthers slipped past the second-ranked Rams 51-50.

TACOMA – The Mead girls basketball team has taken it up a notch the last two weeks. The upward mobility continued Thursday when the No. 1-ranked Panthers throttled the Skyline Spartans 53-33 in a State 4A tournament opener at the Tacoma Dome.

TACOMA – It was a long day for the University boys and girls basketball teams in more ways than one against arguably the best teams in the State 3A tournaments Thursday. The No. 1-ranked Lakeside (Seattle) Lions used a 15-0 run in the first half as they cruised to a 69-48 win over the Titans boys while the second-ranked Cleveland Eagles were too much for the Titans girls 60-50 at the Tacoma Dome.
