LC takes another win from CdA

Two games, two different defensive strategies and two wins by the Lake City boys basketball team over its crosstown rival. Unbeaten Bears stifle Saxons

A.J. Knudsen isn’t so much making up for lost time as he’s making the most of his time. The Central Valley junior guard missed four games with a concussion. He returned during the holidays and has been an added bonus to the Greater Spokane League-leading Bears.

Bullpups adjust to loss of Wright

The Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team had a wonderful first one-third of the Greater Spokane League season. The Bullpups, 8-0 overall, take a 6-0 record into 2013 with two-thirds of the league schedule remaining. Within that stretch, G-Prep must play second-place Mead (7-1, 5-1) twice.

CV Bears turn heads once again

We can’t look forward in 2013 without taking quick inventory of what transpired in 2012. And when it comes to prep athletic success in Eastern Washington and North Idaho, this region takes no back seat to any in either state.

Bears make it look easy

In a matchup of the boys basketball teams picked to finish 1-2 in the Greater Spokane League, the defending champions made it look easy on Friday night. The Central Valley Bears rode hot shooting and sound defense to fend off the visiting Gonzaga Prep Bullpups 58-40 in a game that wasn’t close.

‘Goose’ bumps

Caelyn Orlandi thought she was just going along for the ride when, as a freshman, she accompanied the Coeur d’Alene girls basketball team to the state tournament. She had no reason to think otherwise. After all, she split time in the regular season between the varsity and junior varsity, seeing little time with the older players.

Tri-State wrestling tourney adds 98-pound class

The annual Tri-State wrestling tournament may be getting older, but it’s showing that even old dogs can learn new tricks. Friday launches the 41st edition and this year the tourney will include a 15th weight – 98 pounds – commensurate with the classes used in Idaho.

Bullpups pull away from Tigers

Mike Arte is all about his Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team pushing the tempo. But he wants the Bullpups to do so intelligently. They did in the second half as Gonzaga Prep pulled away from the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers 77-66 in Greater Spokane League play Tuesday.

Lupfer earns her spot

Lewis and Clark girls basketball coach Jim Redmon didn’t start freshman Riley Lupfer in the Tigers’ opening game on Tuesday. Redmon wanted Lupfer to earn the job. She started Friday and it’s doubtful she’ll come out of the lineup anytime soon.

G-Prep uses 19-0 run to overwhelm Shadle

The end product will be much better than the early returns for the Gonzaga Prep boys basketball team. What the Bullpups showed defensively Tuesday, though, has been a staple under coach Matty McIntyre.

U-Hi senior Bailey was league MVP last season

Brett Bailey was named the Greater Spokane League’s most valuable player last season. It’s not likely the University standout’s senior year will look much like his junior campaign – he will be even better.

Young Broncos eager for title

There are some who might suggest that the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague football team has arrived a year earlier than expected. After all, the Broncos start four juniors, two sophomores and even had to resort to starting two freshmen because of injuries in their 21-7 win over Waitsburg-Prescott in the State 2B semifinals last week.
