North Central’s Hoffman does it all on football field

“Loyal” is one of the first words to come to mind when talking   about North Central’s do-everything football standout Jake Hoffman. Hoffman lived two streets from Shadle Park when he had to decide which high school to attend. He chose North Central because friends off his Pop Warner team were headed there.

Ferris blanks LC in South Hill battle

The defense appears to be ripening at the right time for the Ferris Saxons. And if the Saxons get out of their way on offense a few more times, that side of the line of scrimmage could round into late-season form.

Rypien passes Shadle Park past North Central

Uncle Mark Rypien is now in his nephew’s rearview mirror. Sensational sophomore quarterback Brett Rypien leapfrogged past his famous uncle and former Super Bowl MVP to move into the No. 3 spot among the Greater Spokane League’s all-time single-season passing leaders, and in so doing the Highlanders moved closer to earning their first play-in berth since 2004.

Mead defeats Central Valley

The Mead football team’s offense played as if it needed to get to the sidelines as quickly as possible Thursday. The Panthers needed just nine plays and 3 minutes and 14 seconds to score four touchdowns as Mead held off the Central Valley Bears 28-16 in a key Greater Spokane League game at Joe Albi Stadium.

Lee: Committee considers class changes

Some consider the classification system in Washington broken. I contend there’s at least one too many classifications, but that’s not an argument that will gain any traction in these parts – especially in the B ranks.

Mead defeats Jackson for Crossover title

It was the match the Mead volleyball team had prepared for all week. The No. 3-ranked Panthers, playing well from back to front, topped the top-ranked Jackson Timberwolves 25-20, 29-27 in the 64-team Crossover Classic championship match Saturday at Ferris.

Ferris plays tough defense in win over Wildcats

While it may not have been the Ferris Saxons’ most consistent offensive game Friday, it was certainly more than enough. Especially considering it may have been the Saxons’ best defensive output as Ferris handled the Mt. Spokane Wildcats 28-7 in a Greater Spokane League football game at Joe Albi Stadium.

Mead bounces back with rout of Shadle Park

How does a football team respond a week after a deflating loss? How about eight touchdowns in the first half, four in the game’s first 9 minutes. That’s how the Mead Panthers bounced back from their mistake-ridden loss to Gonzaga Prep.

The Lewis and Clark Tigers had transportation issues, arriving at Joe Albi Stadium 30 minutes before their game Thursday. The Tigers had no transportation problems once their Greater Spokane League football game kicked off. Lewis and Clark, coming off its worst game of the season, jumped all over the Rogers Pirates, finishing with a 52-6 victory.

G-Prep topped Mead by avoiding turnovers

The difference in the Greater Spokane League football showdown last Thursday between Gonzaga Prep and Mead was simple to identify. One team played well (Gonzaga Prep, 5-0) and one team didn’t (Mead, 4-1).

Lee: State formulas undergo change

In Greater Spokane League 4A and 3A district tournaments this year, earning a first or second seed will present the shortest and less difficult route to state. The top four of five 4A and 3A teams from regular-season play qualify for district tourneys. But earning a first or second seed comes with extra privileges.

Freshman Shaq Hill recovers onside kick to help Eagles win

Wide receiver Shaquille Hill wouldn’t have been the guy the Eastern Washington University football coaching staff picked as the player most likely to recover an onside kick late in the Eagles’ comeback Saturday. After all, the freshman redshirt from Stockton, Calif., was filling in for Daniel Johnson, who had been subbing for injured Nick Edwards.

Saxons use late first-half flurry to pull away from NC

The football game between Ferris and North Central turned in a matter of 2 minutes late in the first half Friday. The Indians pulled within 14-12 before Ferris used a big play and a turnover to score 10 points for a comfortable cushion as the Saxons prevailed 31-12 in a Greater Spokane League game at Joe Albi Stadium.

Shadle Park makes statement in win over Mt. Spokane

Now the Shadle Park Highlanders can talk seriously about the possibility of the postseason. The Highlanders posted a historic win – and just the third in third-year coach Alan Stanfield’s stint at Shadle – with a convincing 30-7 decision over the Mt. Spokane Wildcats in a Greater Spokane League football game Friday at Joe Albi Stadium.
