Jose Valdespina pitches gem against Salem-Keizer

Time is running out on the 2012 Spokane Indians, but at least for a night right-handed Jose Valdespina kept their flickering playoff hopes alive. A free-agent signee out of Santiago, Dominican Republic in 2010, Valdespina was spot on for six innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a season-high 10 as Spokane shut out the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 3-0 in a Northwest League baseball game Thursday before 4,673 at Avista Stadium.

The Northwest Blazers Orange girls basketball team completed another highly successful season. The Orange captured the championship at the MSNM tournament in San Diego. The Orange defeated another team from their club system, the Blazers Black, 47-29 in the final. It was the first time in the history of the MSNM NCAA certified tournaments that two teams from the same club played in the final.

The Spokane Indians snapped a 10-game losing streak, topping the Tri-City Dust Devils 1-0 before 3,391 in a Northwest League game at Avista Stadium. Right-handed starter Eric Brooks (1-1) did his part, pitching five scoreless innings and retiring the final 13 batters he faced after giving up a single to open the game.

Wood bat classic set this week

The way the calendar falls this year, the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat Classic American Legion tournament begins on Wednesday, the 4th of July, and concludes Saturday. Chino Red out of Chino, Calif., returns to defend its championship in the Senior division. Chino defeated the Eagle Vipers (Meridian, Idaho) in the final last year.

Youth sports notes: Griggs to coach Riverside football

Tom Griggs, who has been all over the state of Washington coaching high school football, has been named head coach at Riverside. A Montesano graduate, Griggs played two years at Washington State University and was on teams that went to the Sun Bowl and Rose Bowl. His collegiate career was cut short because of a back injury.

The storied North Idaho College wrestling program has hit a number of milestones in its 43-year history, including 13 national championships. But one achievement away from the mat has coach Pat Whitcomb almost as excited as if his team won another title: Wednesday morning his wrestling team handed out its 10,000th book to a Coeur d’Alene first-grader.

Most of them, though, were a product of a physical, well-played game by both the Metro and the Region. Central Valley’s Brooke Gallaway hit a free throw with 5 seconds left to lift the Metro to an 80-79 victory Monday at University High School.
