Mead boys take second in State 4A track

TACOMA – Quantity trumped quality in the State 4A boys track and field championships Saturday afternoon. Gig Harbor, which had more than double the qualifiers thanks to more available state berths than Mead, captured the team title, topping the Panthers on a gorgeous final day in Star Track XXX at Mt. Tahoma High School.

TACOMA – Things didn’t start well for Pullman senior Adam Mahama in the 2A discus Saturday in the final day of Star Track XXX at Mt. Tahoma High School. “When I started throwing, I had a couple worm-burners,” Mahama said.

Spokane area dominates state 3,200

TACOMA – Katie Knight was disappointed she didn’t get to go head to head against the reigning 3A 3,200-meter state champion on the opening day of Star Track XXX Thursday evening at Mt. Tahoma High School. That will have to wait until Saturday when the North Central junior meets Amy-Eloise Neale of Glacier Peak in the 1,600.

In the Hutchinson family, throwing the shot put has become a rite for the five sisters. Corissa and Ashley won state championships at Mead and the middle sister, Courtney, joined her older sisters with a state title two years ago as a freshman before finishing runner-up last spring.

Mead’s boys win 4A track regional with ease

Is seven enough? The Mead boys track team will find out next week at the State 4A track meet in Tacoma. The Panthers qualified fewer than John Mires desired – seven plus two alternates – as Mead captured the Eastern Regional championship as the two-day meet concluded under sunny skies at Fran Rish Stadium.

Mead relay won’t be denied

RICHLAND – If the Mead 400-meter relay quartet had a most valuable athlete at the district meet last week, it was senior Tymen Grant. Grant, stretching to make a baton exchange halfway through the race, fell face first on the track, and her face took the worst of the blow. She suffered a cut on her forehead and multiple scratches, but the worst of it was a concussion.

RICHLAND – The beauty of state-qualifying track meets is quite often athletes who have competed in the shadows of other standouts all season emerge. Count Ferris junior thrower Damon Unland in that category. It took one throw to vault Unland from unheralded to a state contender in the discus.

The Mead boys track team is heavily favored to capture the 4A regional championship this weekend. Mead coach John Mires hopes to get about 15 of his 25 regional qualifiers to state. In some events the Panthers could get multiple qualifiers.

As high school all-star basketball games go, the Jack Blair Memorial Classic has stood the test of time. It’s 19 years old and features most of the top girls players from the area. That will be the case again June 4 when the Region takes on the Metro at University. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.

For the Greater Spokane League boys and girls track champions, the District 8 4A meet went better than scripted. Although no team trophies are awarded, Mead’s boys and Central Valley’s girls started their second seasons Friday evening by picking up where they left off in league. The Panthers, behind four-event champion Wes Bailey, piled up 194 points, 57.5 ahead of runner-up Ferris. The CV girls, behind three-event winner Savannah Hoekstra, finished with 177.5, 13 better than Mead.

Nathan Weitz was a runner on a mission Thursday. The Shadle Park senior long-distance ace had the school’s coveted 3,200-meter record – 8 minutes, 55.36 seconds, set by Michael Kiter in 2001 – in his sights.
