SP’s Weitz runs away with 3,200 at District 8 track

Nathan Weitz was a runner on a mission Thursday. The Shadle Park senior long-distance ace had the school’s coveted 3,200-meter record – 8 minutes, 55.36 seconds, set by Michael Kiter in 2001 – in his sights. The clock near the finish line read 7:51 as he started the bell lap of the grueling eight-lap race. Try as he might, Weitz came up a tad short, winning by nearly 19 seconds in 8:56.84 in the first day of the District 8 3A meet at Spokane Falls Community College. It’s the first time in his career that he’s broken the 9-minute mark.

Switch to track pays off for DP’s Amann

It was mildy surprising this spring when Dan Amann of Deer Park ran 4 minutes, 22.69 seconds in his first-ever 1,600 meters. Yes, he was new to track, but certainly not new to long-distance running. After all, he placed sixth at the State 2A cross country meet last fall.

G-Prep captures District 8 4A baseball title

The District 8 4A baseball championship game had more drama than it needed – some of it provided by those not wearing gloves on the field – but the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups managed to overcome adversity when it counted most. Zach Bonneau lifted a line drive to left field that was misjudged because of the setting sun at Avista Stadium, bringing in the go-ahead run as G-Prep knocked off the Mead Panthers 6-4 in nine innings to secure the Greater Spokane League’s top seed to the subregional.

Mead boys win fifth straight track title

In his words, Wes Bailey said he was flat Thursday afternoon. It had nothing to do with the weather, which had to be maddening for any spring sports athletes let alone those in track and field.

Deer Park boys claim first GNL track title

Parents should let coaches coach

Pardon me if it seems like I write a column like this every year. It’s a subject that is a perennial hot-button topic. Let’s get one thing straight from the start: Parents, no matter how well intentioned, can’t see anything objectively when it comes to their sons and daughters and their coaches.

Rain-plagued GSL season sloshes toward end

Greater Spokane League softball teams had just caught up on all the makeup dates caused by rainouts last Wednesday when another round of games was lost Thursday. Those games were made up Saturday. But with a week left in the regular season and the forecast calling for more rain, completing a league schedule is doubtful.

Hoekstra puts CV on track toward girls GSL title

Central Valley sophomore Savannah Hoekstra knew what was on the line Thursday in a Greater Spokane League track showdown against visiting Mead. Hoekstra wanted to do her part. She did more than that and some as she captured the 100 meters in a wind-aided 12.55 seconds and 200 (26.40), anchored the winning 800 relay (1:45.26) and led a 1-2-3 finish in the long jump, leaping 16 feet, 5¼ inches against a headwind.

Albi needs work, but there’s time

When Herb Rotchford took over last fall as Greater Spokane League secretary, near the top of his list of things to do was to take a hard look at the functionality of Albi Stadium. Most can agree that Albi Stadium needs a major overhaul. It’s outlived its purpose as originally constructed.

Castle takes his shot

NEWPORT – Aaron Castle’s introduction to the shot put and discus in a sixth-grade track fair wasn’t necessarily the inspiration that would launch him toward an NCAA Division I scholarship someday. Any good story like Castle’s, though, usually has a humble beginning.
