GSL gets partner in new league

The Greater Spokane League has struck up a working relationship with the new 4A/3A league in Eastern Washington – the Mid-Columbia Conference. The MCC is the result of the messy divorce this winter in the Columbia Basin Big Nine. The MCC includes all seven of the Tri-Cities schools and Walla Walla. The CBBN will continue with Wenatchee, Eastmont, Moses Lake, Eisenhower, Davis and Sunnyside.

Redemption song

Katelan Redmon didn’t want how she played Saturday, especially on offense, to be the last thing her hometown fans remembered of her at Gonzaga University. Redmon got into early foul trouble against Rutgers and sat much of the first half. The struggles, though, were game long as she finished with five points on 1-of-7 shooting, two rebounds and three turnovers in 18 minutes.

Miami takes out Idaho State

The University of Miami played according to script Saturday. The third-seeded Hurricanes disrupted No. 14 Idaho State University early and often, pasting the Bengals 70-41 in an NCAA women’s basketball tournament game before 5,680 at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Three women’s college basketball teams have more than one John Wooden Award finalist. One of those teams, the University of Miami, is in Spokane today. The Hurricanes’ two Wooden finalists are senior guards Shenise Johnson and Riquna Williams, but just one made the trip to the Northwest, where No. 3 seed Miami (25-5) opens the NCAA tournament this afternoon against No. 14 Idaho State University (24-7).

TACOMA – The magical ride had an egg-falling-off-the-wall ending Saturday for the Central Valley boys basketball team. Davis built a 10-point lead with 2 minutes to go and held off the Bears 48-42 in the State 4A championship game Saturday at the Tacoma Dome.

TACOMA – From the opening tip, it was obvious the University boys basketball team was determined to capture the third-place trophy Saturday morning. The Titans did pretty much what they wanted to do as University was too much for the Kamiakin Braves, winning 63-50 in the State 3A game to decide third and fifth places at the Tacoma Dome.

Gonzaga Prep girls finish fifth at state

The Gonzaga Prep girls basketball program had been to the State 4A tournament on several occasions over the last 30 years or so. But none of those squads had brought hardware home from Seattle or Tacoma. That changed for the Bullpups on Saturday, despite a 56-51 loss to Mt. Rainier. Gonzaga Prep grabbed the fifth-place trophy, while Mt. Rainier finished third.
