For the first time in Timberlake’s 15-year history, the Tigers’ boys basketball team is headed to state. Timberlake exorcised some demons Wednesday, capturing its first 3A District I championship with a 60-46 win over the Priest River Spartans at Lakeland High School in Rathdrum.

Is it state or is it just a state of being? Technically, it is state. When the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association made radical changes to its state boys and girls basketball tournaments three years ago, they were shrunk from four-day events to three, plus one game at a regional site the weekend before.

TACOMA – It ended up being more work than the University wrestling team anticipated Saturday. The Titans sent four into state championship matches but they went 0 for 3 until senior 195-pounder Tanner Orndorff captured an individual title, winning 7-2, and in so doing clinched University’s third team title since 2005.

TACOMA – Amid the backdrop of Mat Classic reaching its 25th anniversary, the University Titans were setting the table for a State 3A championship on Friday. University coach Don Owen stopped short of calling it a perfect opening day. He also sidestepped the question about the team championship.

Coach won’t rejoin Viks

Kent Leiss said Monday he will not return as the Coeur d’Alene High School boys basketball coach this season. He resigned on Feb. 1, two days after a group of disgruntled parents met with administrators to discuss what they considered to be verbal abuse of their sons by Leiss and a volunteer assistant.
