Brett Rypien was right. The senior Shadle Park quarterback told anyone who would listen that the Highlanders would be able to replace their top four receivers who graduated. They combined to catch 190 of Rypien’s 253 completions last fall.

Lake City rolls past Lewis and Clark, 29-0

Lake City quarterback Michael Goggin pointed the finger at himself for key mistakes in the first half, especially late in the second quarter Friday night. And Timberwolves coach Van Troxel credited the senior for bouncing back with a solid second half as Lake City shut out the visiting Lewis and Clark Tigers 29-0 in a nonleague football game.

Indians can’t slow Bengals

Uncertain and slow a week ago in a season-opening loss, the Lewiston football team made a 180-degree turnaround in six days. Leading the way was senior running back Tyler Eberhardt. A backup last year, Eberhardt scored four first-half touchdowns as the Bengals opened a 34-7 lead by halftime en route to a 41-7 victory over the North Central Indians at Albi Stadium on Thursday night.

Greg Lee: Plenty of races to keep an eye on this year

Had the Greater Spokane League not divided into 4A and 3A divisions in football, this could have been a year that as many as eight teams may have had realistic thoughts of a league championship. The move to two divisions was long overdue. And it should stick – if for no other reason than the GSL should expand by one and perhaps by as many as three 3A teams in three years.

SANDPOINT – Post Falls football coach Jeff Hinz was quick to acknowledge how special the Trojans’ 42-39 season-opening win over the Sandpoint Bulldogs was Friday at Barlow Stadium. Then Hinz was just as quick to praise his players, steering the conversation away from his 10-month battle with cancer.

A pair of 6-foot-2 Mead girls basketball players continued the recent parade of Greater Spokane League standouts making oral commitments to NCAA Division I schools. Sue Winger and Coreen Labish have given commitments to the University of Idaho and Wyoming, respectively.

It may not be unanimous but the Greater Spokane League’s 4A coaches believe Gonzaga Prep will capture the league championship. The team the coaches believe will earn the other play-in berth is Ferris. The coaches believe all six teams will be competitive.

Lewis and Clark turns to George Pfeifer to run girls basketball team

Just when you thought the level of coaching in Greater Spokane League girls basketball coaching couldn’t get better, Lewis and Clark has hired George Pfeifer. Pfeifer, whose Lewis Clark State College men’s teams were a combined 295-206 in 16 years, replaces Jim Redmon, who resigned to take the Tigers’ boys head coaching position.

The Greater Spokane League girls basketball reigning most valuable player is headed to the University of Oregon. Gonzaga Prep senior-to-be Otiona Gildon has given Ducks and former Gonzaga University coach Kelly Graves an oral commitment.

At an earlier Greco-Roman and freestyle national wrestling tournament this summer, Trey Meyer decided to concentrate on one discipline. The decision paid off when Meyer of East Valley captured a freestyle national championship at 152 pounds at the Asics/Vaughn Cadet championships in Fargo, North Dakota.
