Mead overwhelms North Central in GSL wrestling

North Central wrestling coach Luke Leifer knew the season-opening week would be difficult while being down two state placers. But even Leifer and Mead coach Phil McLean were surprised by how the Panthers mauled North Central on Thursday.

North Central well-stocked to defend State 3A wrestling title

An argument could be made that the North Central wrestling team wasn’t the best in the 3A classification last year. Not in terms of a top-to-bottom lineup. In the end, though, North Central’s wrestlers – all six qualifiers who placed – were standing at the top of the state heap.

GSL girls basketball: Bullpups’ presence too much for Bears

In a matchup between the girls basketball teams picked to finish 1-2 in the Greater Spokane League, it was a classic mismatch. Defending State 4A champ Gonzaga Prep used its experience to suffocate the young Central Valley Bears early, and the visiting Bullpups didn’t let up in a 72-53 whitewash Tuesday.

Central Valley edges Vikings

What the Coeur d’Alene-Central Valley boys basketball game lacked in offensive execution, it more than made up with effort and intensity Friday night. In a game pitting teams favored to win their league championships, Central Valley withstood a frenetic rally by the visiting Vikings, prevailing 68-62.

Bullpups shake off slow start, cruise past Tigers

Late defensive stop sends Colville to State 1A championship game

It’s no secret what the Colville football team’s strength has been this season. The Indians had to lean as heavily as they have all season on their defense Saturday, using a fourth-and-1 stop at their 19-yard line with 1 minute, 19 seconds remaining to secure a 20-14 win over the Cascade Kodiaks in a State 1A semifinal Saturday afternoon at Albi Stadium.

Wildcats stumble in State 3A semifinals

It’s a good thing Mt. Spokane scored the game’s first touchdown. Because six touchdowns and 421 yards later, the Eastside Catholic Crusaders were on their way to an easy 42-24 win over the Wildcats in a State 3A football semifinal Saturday afternoon at Joe Albi Stadium.

Colville, Cascade run games collide

When Colville football coach Randy Cornwell saw the final score of the Cascade-Zillah quarterfinal, he knew exactly what type of opponent his team would face in the semifinals. Cascade handed Zillah its first loss, shutting down the Leopards 21-7 last week. That’s the same Zillah team that knocked defending State 1A champ Freeman out of the postseason earlier this month.

LRS has powerful foe in Okanogan

Greg Whitmore would never say this is where his team expected to be at this point in November. Not after losing much to graduation off a team that captured a second straight State 2B football championship.

Mt. Spokane has big task vs. Eastside Catholic

For Terry Cloer to say that Eastside Catholic is the best team that his Mt. Spokane football team has played to date might be stating the obvious. After all, this is the State 3A semifinals and there are no slouches left, including the Wildcats.

Republic takes on Liberty Christian

It’s the newbie against the seasoned team when Republic takes on Liberty Christian in a State 1B football semifinal today. The Tigers (11-1) travel to Pasco to face the No. 1-ranked Patriots (11-0) at Edgar Brown Stadium. Kickoff is at 4.

Chiawana dismantles G-Prep

PASCO – It’s a bad thing when you see the back of a player’s uniform most of the game – especially if said jersey is worn by a running back. Just ask the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups.

Patriots roll into State 1B semis

PASCO – John Lesser proved to be more for the Liberty Christian football team Saturday. And because of that the Patriots continue their quest to capture a second State 1B championship in three years.

LRS tops nemesis; win streak now 38

PASCO – Edgar Brown Stadium was the site of the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague football team’s last loss, and the defeat was to the Broncos’ State 2B quarterfinal foe Friday night, Waitsburg-Prescott. The Broncos were determined not to lose to the Cardinals – not so much because they wanted to extend their sizeable winning streak, but because they just didn’t want to lose to Waitsburg-Prescott.

Ritzville leaves Brewster out in the cold

RITZVILLE – Appropriately, the two-time state champion Lind-Ritzville/Sprague football team began defense of its championships with defense Friday. And if the Broncos want to hang around in the postseason, they’ll need more of the same.

Heart of a champion

I’ve covered cross country on and off the past 30 years – mostly off. The sport hasn’t been on my radar much because, to be honest, football has garnered most of my attention in the fall.
