Ferris pitcher Spencer Ansett shows perfect finesse

A week ago, Spencer Ansett was contemplating a handful of college opportunities. When Ansett won a full-ride academic scholarship recently to Whitworth University, though, the Ferris baseball standout immediately knew those opportunities had been narrowed.

Lee: Demands of parents kind of ridiculous

I have a pet peeve I want to get off my chest. I know that’s not exactly the best invitation to continue reading, but … I believe – or at least I hope – that 99.9 percent of the parents of high school athletes understand that newspapers aren’t responsible for their little Johnny or Mary receiving scholarship offers.

Ansett, Saxons top Bullpups

Six days ago, Ferris pitcher Spencer Ansett was far from his best but had enough to pick up a win against Gonzaga Prep. Six days later, Ansett was at his best, and it was too much for the visiting Bullpups.

Great Northern League baseball standings crowded at top

Great Northern League baseball is bunched up at the top. Clarkston and defending champ Cheney are tied at 8-2 and Pullman is a half game behind at 7-2. A key doubleheader on Saturday and a single game a week from today should go far in deciding the league championship and district tournament seeding.

Ferris holds off G-Prep to pull into first-place tie

It’s a nice thing when your ace pitcher isn’t completely dialed in and your team finds a way to win anyway. Such was the case Wednesday afternoon when the Ferris Saxons pulled into first place with Gonzaga Prep by handing the Bullpups their first Greater Spokane League setback.

Lee: Spring unkind to high school sports

I’ve contended for the last 26 years that spring doesn’t officially start until after April 1 – and, in some years, it’s been delayed as late as early May. You have to have empathy for spring sports athletes. I don’t want to be all gloom and doom, but the extended forecast for spring doesn’t look good. We’re supposed to continue to have seasonal conditions – read rain – until as late as early June. Of course, according to the “experts” we will have longer stretches of dry weather come May.

Carryover

Brian Munhall had an inkling. The Gonzaga Prep coach had reason to be optimistic going into the season. The core of his team played on a AA American Legion team that went 17-2 last summer, qualifying for the state tournament.

A fourth straight trip to the Final Four is within Stanford’s reach. A national championship? That, too, is in the Cardinal’s site.
