State basketball quarterfinals get under way Thursday

Different seems to fall short in describing Washington’s boys and girls high school basketball tournaments. There would be some – make that most, perhaps – who would argue that the real state tournaments begin Thursday.

Davis ends Ferris’ season

RICHLAND – Two things that normally don’t happen to the Ferris boys basketball team occurred at the wrong time Saturday afternoon. The Davis Pirates shot better than any team had against the second-ranked Saxons this season, and Ferris picked an inopportune time to play shaky defense.

Gonzaga Prep girls lose State 4A thriller to Chiawana

The Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team overcame a number of things Saturday afternoon. What the Bullpups couldn’t hurdle in the end, though, was a stagnant offense in critical moments and three starters on the bench who had fouled out. Gonzaga Prep did all it could to pull off a miracle, but the No. 1-ranked Chiawana Riverhawks eliminated the Greater Spokane League champion 69-65 in double overtime in a State 4A tournament advancement game at Art Dawald Gym.

G-Prep, Ferris win

RICHLAND – If ever there was an example of men against boys it was Friday in the State 4A basketball tournament openers at Art Dawald Gym. The Gonzaga Prep Bullpups sliced and diced past the Columbia Basin Big Nine district champ Davis Pirates 72-59 while the Ferris Saxons had no difficulty getting past the Evergreen Plainsmen of Vancouver 62-49.

LC girls headed for Tacoma; G-Prep gets a shot Saturday

RICHLAND – It wasn’t the plan to play Nakia Arquette nearly 30 minutes Friday in her first start since returning from a broken foot. Increased minutes were out of necessity, though. With 6-foot-3 junior post Abang Taka handcuffed in foul trouble, Lewis and Clark coach Jim Redmon had no choice.

Lee: New state format has arrived, like it or not

Perhaps we’re creatures of habit and therefore we don’t like change. Ready or not, change happens this weekend when Washington’s new boys and girls basketball state tournament format debuts, culminating in eight-team, three-day tourneys the following week at stops in Spokane, Yakima and Tacoma.

State 4A tournaments open Friday in Richland

The Lewis and Clark girls basketball team’s 56-51 win over Gonzaga Prep in the District 8 4A championship game may have been as a program victory as anything else. The matchup came down to experience in similar situations against trying to overcome a lack of experience.

Ferris storms back to qualify for state

Now that was more like the Greater Spokane League boys basketball champions. Like they did most of the regular season to opponents, the Ferris Saxons muffled the visiting Richland Bombers with defense, and that fed inspired offense Tuesday.

New-look state tournaments tip off Friday

The road to Tacoma, Yakima and Spokane for boys and girls basketball teams – or, in this case, the road to the Hardwood Classic as the WIAA has dubbed it – begins with stops in Spokane, Richland, Walla Walla, Ellensburg and Wenatchee for Eastern Washington schools Friday and Saturday. Yes, the state tournaments as we’ve known them take on a different feel this year. Now all the state tournaments are being held on the same weekend – or, in this case, weekends, beginning with first-round games involving 16 teams at four regional sites and condensing to the Elite Eight with the 4A and 3A teams at Tacoma, the 2A and 1A teams at Yakima and the 2B and 1B teams in Spokane.
