Presley sets scoring record as Prep wins title

The Gonzaga Prep girls basketball team thought it was going to cruise Tuesday after the Bullpups held North Central scoreless in the second quarter and took a 16-point lead into halftime. The Bullpups had to survive a frantic fourth quarter, though, that saw them commit 10 turnovers and the Indians draw even before a driving basket by Lindsay Stockton with 20 seconds left lifted Gonzaga Prep to a 38-36 win over the Indians in Greater Spokane League girls basketball action.

Longtime Gonzaga Prep figure Nick Scarpelli dies at 87

For several years while Nick Scarpelli was Gonzaga Prep’s athletic director, he would donate his stipend to buy new uniforms for various teams. “He was so generous and did so many things people never knew about,” Gonzaga Prep president Al Falkner said. “Those were things he didn’t want known. I can talk about it now.”

The discernable gap between the Greater Spokane League girls basketball 4A and 3A teams at the start of the season has tightened. The Shadle Park Highlanders and North Central Indians, co-leaders of the 3A pack, knocked off a pair of 4A teams Thursday as the next-to-last week of league play concluded.

Area prep wrestlers begin postseason competition

The road to Mat Classic XXIII in Tacoma begins in earnest this weekend. The District 8 4A and 3A tournaments will be held at Mead beginning at 5 p.m. Friday. Action resumes Saturday morning at 9:30 and afternoon finals are at 4:30.

G-Prep’s Hopkins signs with Stanford; Oregon State lands Clute

Charlie Hopkins signed his letter of intent before school Wednesday and planned to spend the afternoon continuing rehabilitation from a season-ending knee injury last fall. The Gonzaga Prep defensive end is headed to Stanford. For that, Hopkins is grateful that the Palo Alto, Calif., school stood behind its offer even though he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee midway through the season.

Lee: West Valley girls regain their health

Shaq is back. West Valley four-year basketball standout Shaniqua Nilles, warmly nicknamed Shaq, returned from a bout with mononucleosis last week. Nilles and sophomore starter Aaliyah Ashley-Meek, who also came down with the illness at the same time, both missed seven games.

Shadle Park sets sights on another state bid

Best friends have played key roles in the resurrection of Shadle Park girls basketball. Seniors Kendra Knutsen and Chelsea Chandler are four-year lettermen and three-year starters. They were at state two years ago when the Highlanders took second and captured the school’s first state trophy since 1989. Shadle Park took third last year.
