Ferris could find itself in elite territory

With what Ferris did in football and the start the Saxons have had in basketball, I got to wondering if a 4A school has won the state championships in both sports in the same year. So I checked out the WIAA website. The WIAA has governed state football since 1973 and just one 4A school, Juanita, has won state titles in both sports in that 38-year span. It happened in 1984. Bethel and Wilson finished runners-up in both sports in 2000 and 1998, respectively.

It’s rare when good basketball and the pageantry of a spirit doubleheader merge. That’s what happened Friday when the Lake City boys fended off Coeur d’Alene 61-57 and the Coeur d’Alene girls did likewise to Lake City 48-44 in two well-played, tightly contested Inland Empire League games in the 13th annual Fight for the Fish before a standing-room-only crowd of 2,700 at LC.

Spirit basketball games are always entertaining, no matter the outcome. The spirit games in the Greater Spokane League are still weeks away. But over the state line in Idaho, the annual Fight for the Fish doubleheader is Friday at Lake City when the Coeur d’Alene boys and girls visit. The girls tip things off at 5:45 followed by the boys at about 7:30.
