Snow impacts State 4A, 2A semifinals

The 4A and 2A State semifinal football games scheduled for Albi Stadium this afternoon have been postponed and will be played Monday at the Tacoma Dome, the WIAA announced late Friday afternoon. Greater Spokane League secretary Randy Ryan said efforts to remove snow Friday from the Albi turf became futile as the temperature rose. And with more snow forecasted through the evening and today, Ryan said it became apparent the field could not be made playable.

Ferris tandem stars on both sides of ball

Watch the Ferris football team play and two things become strikingly apparent. Make that two numbers. More specifically, the numbers 56 and 74. While certainly a handful of skill players stand out at any moment for the Saxons, 56 and 74 are frequently in the middle of things. For good reason. Dillon Beschel (56) and Russell Stinson (74) rarely come off the field. Beschel, a left tackle, has been a three-year starter on offense and a two-year starter at right defensive end. Stinson, the Saxons’ center and defensive tackle, has been a two-year starter on both sides of the line of scrimmage.

Lee: Viks’ ‘family-first’ credo pays off

While I was interviewing Coeur d’Alene senior running back Zach Keiser last week for a feature story, he intentionally stopped to make a point about his coaches, especially head coach Shawn Amos. Many times we think football coaches, particularly head coaches, are supposed to be these stern, unapproachable figures. They exist to coach football and inspire their athletes to win at all costs. Nothing more and nothing less.

Ferris makes semifinals as Riverhawk drive stalls

PASCO – It had a defensive tone from the outset Saturday afternoon. In the end, a stop propelled the Ferris Saxons into the State 4A football semifinals for a fourth straight year. The third-ranked Saxons were cruising along leading 13-0 with 9:38 remaining in the game, but suddenly Ferris had to find a way to fend off the Chiawana Riverhawks on fourth-and-7 from the 12-yard line with 28 seconds to go.

Viking conquest

MOSCOW, Idaho – It took more than a half, but the Coeur d’Alene football team eventually left no doubt. The top-ranked Vikings shut down a usually prolific offense and Coeur d’Alene’s offense finished the task in a convincing 28-7 triumph over the Centennial Patriots in the State 5A championship game played before an estimated crowd of 5,000 Friday night at the Kibbie Dome.
