G-Prep tops Ferris

Gonzaga Prep boys basketball coach Matty McIntyre marvels when he thinks about how much his team has grown from the season opener to the District 8 4A championship game Friday. Truthfully, McIntyre didn’t know what the season would hold. But he did know this – his Bullpups would play defense as if their lives depended on it.

LC rallies past Gonzaga Prep for district title, state berth

Hayley Hendricksen took the net and hung it around Lewis and Clark girls basketball coach Jim Redmon’s neck. Perhaps with 1 minute left in the third quarter, though, Redmon thought that same net was tightening around his team’s chances of capturing the District 8 4A championship Friday.

North Central girls, boys both headed to state

For the first time in the 37-year history of Washington girls basketball, the North Central Indians are headed to state. Using its usually adhesive defense, North Central pulled away from the Shadle Park Highlanders 51-38 in the District 8 3A championship game Thursday at Shadle.

Coeur d’Alene girls seek fourth consecutive state title

Dale Poffenroth has been to enough state tournaments to know that his Coeur d’Alene girls basketball team should fare well when the State 5A tournament begins today. “If this team that showed up (last Friday) shows up (at state), we’ll be in every game,” Poffenroth said after the Vikings handled Lake City 63-42 to earn a state berth a week after losing to their crosstown rival 41-35.

North Central’s girls force another game at district tournament

Her face belied the tumult in her tummy. North Central senior Lindsey Schaefer made two free throws with 6 seconds left to force an if-necessary championship game in the District 8 3A tournament as the second-seeded Indians rallied to knock off No. 1 Shadle Park 42-41 Wednesday at Shadle.

SWABS honor CdA girls coach Poffenroth

Dale Poffenroth has been part of 534 victories as a girls basketball coach – 17 years at Central Valley where his teams captured three state championships and the last seven at Coeur d’Alene where those teams also have snagged three state titles. The one honor that had eluded him, though, is the Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters (SWABs) Junior Female Coach of the Year.

Ferris romps to district win; G-Prep next

Ferris boys basketball coach Don Van Lierop is a tough man to impress. He stopped short of calling the Saxons’ 89-46 romp over the visiting Rogers Pirates in a District 8 4A game Tuesday their best of the season.

CdA girls romp over Lake City to clinch state berth

Adjustments were key, no doubt. More than anything, though, the three-time 5A state champion Coeur d’Alene girls basketball team was determined to get back to state to go for a fourth consecutive title.

Gonzaga Prep holds off U-Hi; Ferris goes 18-0

The University-Gonzaga Prep boys basketball game Thursday was a good tune-up going into postseason. Gonzaga Prep played its usual sticky man-to-man defense and University’s 1-3-1 zone coupled with some full-court pressure caused the Bullpups fits at times.

Indians pursue first state berth

Walk into North Central’s gym and you’ll see boys and girls sports listed on a wall with various league, district, regional and state accomplishments. One sport is conspicuously absent. Girls basketball has had the least success at North Central.
