Sierra’s two-run homer lifts Indians

Trailing 4-2, the Spokane Indians rallied for a 6-4 win over the Yakima Bears in front of 4,334 in a Northwest League baseball game Thursday. In just 14 games, it appears that Ruben Sierra Jr. has developed a flair for the dramatic.

Lake City’s Capaul will pitch against Indians

Lake City High graduate Alex Capaul will pitch tonight as part of the Yakima Bears’ piggyback starting rotation. Capaul, a University of Hawaii product drafted in the 43rd round by the Arizona Diamondbacks in early June, was assigned to the Missoula Ospreys of the Pioneer League initially after signing. But he was moved to Yakima after one appearance. He’s had two appearances with Yakima, pitching five scoreless innings. He’s allowed three hits while striking out two.

Perez’s pitching helps Indians snap losing streak

The defense returned, the hitters remained hot and starting pitcher Santo Perez owned the Yakima Bears for a second straight start. It all added up to a 7-4 win for the Spokane Indians, who snapped a four-game losing streak Wednesday in a Northwest League baseball game before 3,167 at Avista Stadium.

Wood Bat tournament draws near

The annual Spokane/Coeur d’Alene 4th of July Legion Wood Bat Classic tournaments begin Friday at 15 venues in the region. Seventy-eight teams will be divided into three divisions. Teams are coming from Alberta, British Columbia, California, Idaho, Montana, Saskatchewan, Utah and Washington.

G-Prep boys lacrosse team has banner year

The Gonzaga Prep boys lacrosse team recently captured a league title and finished as state runner-up, and it did so in another state. Gonzaga Prep is part of the North Idaho Lacrosse League. The Bullpups earned the league title last month when they defeated Coeur d’Alene 11-10, with the winning score coming in the final minutes.
