Uncertainty rules the day in GSL football race

I don’t know if I’m surprised or not that such a distinction between Greater Spokane League 4A and 3A football teams seemingly has emerged after two weeks. A look at the standings shows 4A teams Ferris, Lewis and Clark, Central Valley and Gonzaga Prep atop at 2-0. Mead, another 4A team, is next at 1-1, tied with 3A North Central. Then there’s a 3A logjam at 0-2 between Shadle Park, University and Mt. Spokane.

Central Valley downs Mead in GSL football

With Mead leading 28-14 with a little more than 4 minutes to go before halftime, the Greater Spokane League showdown had all the makings of a runaway. Central Valley reversed field, though, scoring the game’s final 27 points as the Bears overcame the two-touchdown deficit, 41-28, over the visiting Panthers.

Lee: Athletics an integral part of education

Ferris runs free during season-opening win over University

Ferris senior Ben Goodwin may not be able to throw it like he used to, but he’s still a weapon. Goodwin and two other Saxons rushed for 100 yards or more as the new-look, run-first Saxons ran over the University Titans 42-14 in a season-opening game Thursday at Albi Stadium.

Lee: Ready or not, here are my picks

I got it wrong last year, and I don’t plan a repeat this fall. I didn’t pick Ferris to win the Greater Spokane League football championship. Big mistake. All the Saxons did was run the table, finishing 14-0 and capturing the State 4A championship.

Mt. Spokane speedster Naccarato sports improved burst

Every year the Greater Spokane League has a football player like Chase Naccarato. The type of player who makes an impact at multiple spots. That stands to reason why a year ago Naccarato was named the league’s all-purpose player of the year.

Use your speed any way you can

Speed is a valuable intangible in any sport, especially football. If an offense’s skill players are quicker than the defense’s skill players, a team has a measurable advantage.

Indians hurt playoff hopes with seventh straight loss

The road followed the Spokane Indians home Tuesday. More than anything, though, a recent trend of poor play, especially at the plate, was pivotal in Spokane’s undoing in a 9-4 setback to the Everett AquaSox in a Northwest League baseball game before 5,193 at Avista Stadium.
