Saxons recover to vanquish Ike

In a game littered with turnovers, the Ferris Saxons took advantage of the last two by the Eisenhower Cadets. A fumble recovery by senior linebacker Cole Lemer at the Cadets’ 46-yard line set up the winning touchdown as the defending state champ Saxons held off Eisenhower 38-31 in a 4A play-in game late Friday at Joe Albi Stadium.

West Valley defeats Cheney to take GNL’s No. 2 seed

West Valley coach Craig Whitney asked do-everything senior standout Dylan Ellsworth before Thursday’s game to carry the team on his back. Ellsworth did just that until the final play as West Valley knocked off the visiting Cheney Blackhawks 27-21 in overtime in a Great Northern League football game that had a typical wild finish.

 It’s November and that can mean only one thing for high school football fans – postseason.  This week is the prelude to the state playoffs in Washington while in Idaho playoffs begin in six classifications with state championship games three weeks away.

The Lake City football team was winless in two tries against the Post Falls Trojans in the regular season. When it mattered most, though, the Timberwolves topped Post Falls twice on Monday night in the 5A Inland Empire League double-elimination tiebreaker at Coeur d’Alene High School.

Finishing second at the State 5A volleyball tournament would probably be disappointing for tradition-laden Idaho Falls. For the Post Falls Trojans, though, it represents the highest state finish in school history.

The Mt. Spokane Wildcats took all the drama out of which team would secure the second 3A football play-in berth by halftime as the Greater Spokane League concluded regular-season play Friday. Senior slotback Chase Naccarato scored three touchdowns in the first two quarters on runs of 29, 20 and 5 yards as the Wildcats ran over the North Central Indians 49-16 at Joe Albi Stadium.

When the Lake City volleyball team’s eight seniors were sophomores on the junior varsity team, they didn’t win a match. That was coach Bret Taylor’s first year at Lake City. He worked with them, and that hard work is paying dividends this season.
