Saxons get by despite faults

Kurtis Karstetter wasn’t in a hurry to get to the locker room. The senior linebacker/running back knew he and his Ferris Saxons teammates were about to hear about the mistakes they made. The good news, though, was the No. 1-ranked Saxons, despite not functioning on all cylinders, had more than enough to hold off the Mt. Spokane Wildcats 24-7 in a Greater Spokane League football game in rainy weather Thursday at Joe Albi Stadium.

Ferris figures to win out in GSL football

We reached the halfway point of the football season in the Greater Spokane League last week. What have we learned through five weeks? Ferris isn’t the Ferris of the 14-0 season a year ago. I doubt that it matters much, though. No disrespect to the other nine undefeated 4A teams around the state, but I don’t see a team as good as Ferris or state runner-up Skyline, winner of three straight state titles (the first in 3A) before the Saxons broke through a year ago.

The Crossover Classic volleyball tournament is Sweet 16 this year. It seems with every year the 64-team tourney is better, and this year will be no different. From 4A to the smallest classifications, some of the top teams across the state will be in one of the 16 pools playing Friday and Saturday at Ferris, Rogers, Shadle Park and Lewis and Clark.

The Ferris-Central Valley football game, a showdown between Greater Spokane League heavyweights, lived up to its billing Friday. It came down to a matter of patience, and the defending State 4A champion Saxons showed the most patience before a standing-room only crowd at CV.

University football coach Bill Diedrick’s dilemma coming into the season was where to play senior Zach Bruce on offense. Diedrick considers Bruce one of the Titans’ better receivers. However, University had a need at running back.
