Wildcats advance

The Mt. Spokane Wildcats took all the drama out of which team would secure the second 3A football play-in berth by halftime as the Greater Spokane League concluded regular-season play Friday.

Senior slotback Chase Naccarato scored three touchdowns in the first two quarters on runs of 29, 20 and 5 yards as the Wildcats ran over the North Central Indians 49-16 at Joe Albi Stadium.

Mt. Spokane (3-6) travels to Columbia Basin Big Nine No. 2 seed Kennewick (8-1) on Friday. Kickoff at Lampson Field is at 5:30 p.m.

Naccarato filled a stat line in the first half, rushing for 136 yards on 13 carries.

Mt. Spokane led 7-0 when North Central (2-7) got a 38-yard field goal from Brad Pelton. But the Wildcats added three TDs in the second quarter to start pulling away.

Naccarato finished with four TDs, pushing his league-leading total to 22. He had 182 yards on 18 carries and caught two passes for 24 yards.

NC junior quarterback Jake Hoffman passed for 260 yards, completing 20 of 29 attempts. He rushed for 75. He was involved in 49 of the Indians’ 54 plays.

NC has a crossover game remaining.

Ferris 21, Gonzaga Prep 14: The Saxons (8-1) earned a share of the GSL title at G-Prep.

Ferris opened a 14-0 lead before the Bullpups (5-4) pulled within 14-7 before halftime.

The Saxons led 21-7 after three quarters, but G-Prep pulled within the final margin when receiver Ryan Gregory pulled in a 72-yard TD pass from Zach Bonneau with 1:25 remaining. The Bullpups attempted an onside kick, but the Saxons recovered to seal the win.

Ferris will meet Columbia Basin Big Nine No. 2 seed Eisenhower (8-1) Friday in a 4A play-in game at Albi Stadium. Kickoff is at 8 p.m.

Running back Kole Heidinger led Ferris with two TDs, rushing for 209 yards on 30 carries.

Rogers 30, Shadle Park 27: Pirates running back Luke Rogers broke a 50-year-old school record by scoring three TDs as the Pirates topped the Highlanders in a game between previously winless teams at Albi.

Larry Eilmes, who went on to a fine career at Washington State University, held the school record, scoring 15 TDs in 1961.

Rogers’ final TD, a 3-yard run, put the Pirates (1-8) ahead 30-20 with 1:48 remaining. But the Highlanders (0-9) scored with 52 seconds to go to pull within 30-27.

Rogers, the player, then recovered a Shadle Park onside kick attempt with 50 seconds left to preserve the win. The Pirates’ talented running back finished with 172 yards on 39 attempts.

Shadle’s season ends. The Highlanders are the odd 3A team out in crossover games.
