Pink Pony reopens to the delight of baseball players, fans

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – It used to be the spring training hot spot. Then, it was gone. Back in the day, the Pink Pony attracted the likes of Dizzy Dean, Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin – Ted Williams and Willie Mays, too. Baseball executives, scouts and scores of fans would flock to the Pony for food and refreshment after a long day at the diamond.

Injured teen promotes newly devised pitchers helmet

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. – Gunnar Sandberg pulled Easton-Bell’s prototype of a protective pitcher helmet over his high school baseball cap and immediately deemed it comfortable. His father thinks it looks cool, too. The Sandbergs now plan to work on convincing others of the importance of such headgear for safety.

Jeremy Affeldt, baseball, San Francisco giants

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Jeremy Affeldt pinches his stomach and there isn’t much to pull. Not anymore. He points out that is typically his problem area. Carrying a little extra weight around his middle was the least of his issues last season, when San Francisco’s happy-go-lucky, left-handed reliever suffered through an off year in which his mechanics wouldn’t cooperate and he dealt with both a side injury and a pulled hamstring.

USF basketball players using heart monitors

SAN FRANCISCO – The laptop screen showed that Cody Doolin’s heart rate had reached the red zone, meaning he was giving his maximum effort during a recent basketball practice at the University of San Francisco. The freshman guard is one of the team’s hardest workers and among its fittest players, typically burning 1,700 calories over the course of a 40-minute game. These days, the coaches know this not just based on a hunch but because they have scientific evidence to prove it.

Huskies stumble

STANFORD, Calif. – Josh Owens scored the go-ahead basket on a left-handed tip-in with 29 seconds left and Stanford stunned No. 17 Washington 58-56 on Thursday night to stay unbeaten at home this season. Scott Suggs missed a baseline 3-pointer moments later for Washington after he knocked down a tying 3 with 1:08 left. Stanford’s Jeremy Green was whistled for a foul against Justin Holiday on the rebound, but Holiday missed both free throws with 2.5 seconds on the clock.

And the winner is … 49ers

SAN FRANCISCO – All week, Jim Harbaugh had a good feeling about making the jump to the NFL and joining the San Francisco 49ers – just the way mentor and late Hall of Fame coach Bill Walsh did more than 30 years ago. Declaring it a “perfect competitive opportunity,” the 47-year-old Harbaugh accepted the job as coach of the 49ers on Friday and said his goal is to win a Lombardi Trophy for “one of the legendary franchises in all of football.”

Ankiel shot gets Braves even

SAN FRANCISCO – Rick Ankiel and the Atlanta Braves came through with another comeback when they absolutely needed one. Ankiel splashed a tiebreaking home run into McCovey Cove in the 11th inning for his first postseason clout and Atlanta rallied from a late four-run deficit to beat the San Francisco Giants 5-4 on Friday night, tying their N.L. division series at a game apiece.

Favre can’t rally Vikings

SAN FRANCISCO – Brett Favre completed one pass and also got clobbered on a sack that lost Minnesota 10 yards. Favre’s highly anticipated first game back with the Vikings lasted all of four unspectacular plays and one series in a 15-10 loss to the 49ers in a nationally televised preseason game Sunday at Candlestick Park, the only NFL show of the night.

Long wait ends

ANAHEIM, Calif. – One key swing by Brian McCann pulled the National League out of the All-Star shadows. McCann’s three-run double in the seventh inning provided the N.L. all the offense it needed to capture its first Midsummer Classic since 1996 with a 3-1 victory Tuesday night.

Something to prove

TEMPE, Ariz. – Jake Peavy is pitching again with a clear head. At last, the 2007 N.L. Cy Young Award winner is at the point where he doesn’t think about his tender ankle or worry about what might happen next to derail his young tenure with the Chicago White Sox.

Better than best

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Tim Lincecum stayed under cover on the dugout steps and quickly assessed the heavy rain soaking the San Francisco Giants’ spring training field. Then he was off, headed to the weight room for a workout. Entering his third full major league season, the two-time reigning N.L. Cy Young Award winner knows he needs to take his routine up a notch to maintain his dominance on the mound.

Sonics get rare win in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Ronald Murray scored a season-high 23 points in place of ill leading scorer Ray Allen, and the Seattle SuperSonics defeated the Sacramento Kings 106-101 on Tuesday night. Rashard Lewis added 24 points, and the Sonics finished with six players in double figures to end a four-game losing streak at Arco Arena. Seattle hadn't won in Sacramento since Feb. 17, 2002.
