Bring on Tri-City

Had there been a script, it couldn't have been written much better. Of course, business is far from finished for the Spokane Chiefs. But that didn't make the act of knocking off the defending Memorial Cup champion Vancouver Giants en route to a showdown with their longstanding rivals any less special Monday night.

Spokane takes Giant step

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The Vancouver Giants checked on Friday night, and since nobody looks prepared to fold, the Spokane Chiefs raised. David Rutherford had a goal and two assists and netminder Dustin Tokarski stopped 22 shots as the Chiefs regained the lead in their Western Conference semifinal series with a 4-0 win over the Giants on Saturday night in front of a crowd of 8,049. Spokane is one win away from knocking off the defending Memorial Cup champions with a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 Western Hockey League playoff series.

Giants even it up

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – It was a Giant win for Vancouver – pun intended. Defenseman Jonathon Blum netted the game-winning goal and Giants captain Spencer Machacek scored into an empty net with 19 seconds remaining in the game on Friday night as Vancouver handed the Spokane Chiefs their first road loss of the 2008 Western Hockey League playoffs with a 3-1 victory in front of a Pacific Coliseum crowd of 8,899.

Chiefs master art of forechecking

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Good forechecking is not only an art, it's a fundamental part of hockey. It's about wanting the puck and aggressively pursuing it in the offensive zone. It's about wearing down opposing defensemen and setting up scoring opportunities.

Chiefs, Giants start over

David Rutherford delivered his mother Tracy an early birthday present Sunday night. With his two goals leading the way, Rutherford – who was traded to Spokane at the beginning of last season – helped the Chiefs even their Western Conference semifinal series against his former team, the Vancouver Giants. The Chiefs and Giants split the first two games of their Western Hockey League playoff series in Spokane – Vancouver won Friday's opener 4-1 and Spokane responded with a 4-1 victory on Sunday night.

Chiefs face must-win situation after Friday loss

The Vancouver Giants raised on Friday night, now it's time for the Spokane Chiefs to go all-in. Coming off a four-game sweep of the Everett Silvertips in the Western Hockey League playoffs, the Chiefs were admittedly undisciplined in a lackluster effort in a 4-1 loss to the Giants on Friday in the best-of-7 Western Conference series opener at the Arena.

Spokane puts hurt on Stockton

You have to figure either the Stockton Lightning are that bad or the Spokane Shock are that good. None of the Shock players or coaches was willing to admit that, of course, and it probably lies somewhere in between.

Giants take big first step

There was no denial from Bill Peters or any of the Spokane Chiefs. The Chiefs didn't bring a disciplined game and the result wasn't pretty.

Shock open home season

Adam Shackleford doesn't assume that there is a large chip on the shoulders of the Stockton Lightning. "Most coaches teach in the now," the second-year Spokane Shock coach said.

A home divided by hockey rivalry

When David Rutherford left his Ladner, British Columbia, home after the holidays in December, he left a simple message for Vancouver Giants goalie Tyson Sexsmith on the whiteboard attached to the door of his old bedroom. It said, "See you in the playoffs." Tracy Rutherford, the mother of Spokane Chiefs overage forward David, houses Sexsmith in Vancouver and wishes both players could advance to the Western Hockey League's Western Conference final. But when the playoffs resume tonight with the Chiefs and Giants kicking off their best-of-7 conference semifinal series at the Arena, Tracy – who will be watching from the stands – knows that isn't possible.

Dominant defender

Permanently inked in his skin on the back of his neck are the words: "Never give up," a motto Sergio Gilliam lives by. The tattoo is not only his mantra, it's a tribute to his late cousin Donald Gilliam, who died in 2006 from meningitis.

Chiefs, Giants are mirror images and 2nd-round foes

While several Spokane Chiefs now have playoff experience, defenseman Trevor Glass has experienced the Vancouver Giants first hand on the front lines. That should come in handy beginning Friday when the Chiefs open up their Western Conference semifinal against the Giants in the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs. The best-of-7 series is a matchup of two eerily similar teams that were ranked in the top five in the Canadian Hockey League polls at the end of the regular season – the Chiefs second and Vancouver fifth.

Chiefs sweep ‘Tips

EVERETT – Break out the brooms and bring on the Vancouver Giants. In by far the most intense and exciting game of their opening-round Western Hockey League playoff series, the Spokane Chiefs completed a four-game sweep of the Everett Silvertips with a 3-2 overtime victory on Friday night at Comcast Arena to win the Western Conference quarterfinal series 4-0.

Chiefs need one victory for sweep

EVERETT – Revenge is sweet, and the Spokane Chiefs are one win away from getting theirs. After a 4-1 road victory on Wednesday night, Spokane has a 3-0 lead over the Everett Silvertips in their best-of-7 Western Conference quarterfinal series. A win tonight at Comcast Arena would put the Chiefs into the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs for the first time since 2003.

Chiefs take command

EVERETT – If you're a betting person, you might consider putting money on a first-round Western Hockey League playoff series victory for the Spokane Chiefs. They are, in more ways than one now, the odds-on favorites.

Chiefs look to keep pedal to metal

The Spokane Chiefs played in overdrive over the weekend, so now it's time to see if they can keep their feet on the pedal. The Chiefs, who have a 2-0 lead in their Western Hockey League best-of-7 playoff series after two commanding victories over the Everett Silvertips, continue their Western Conference quarterfinal tonight in Everett.

Shock trade QB Rummell to Manchester

Some have heard the rumors, and some of the rumors are true. The truth: quarterback Justin Rummell will not be throwing for the Spokane Shock this season.

Chiefs seize 2-0 series lead

In the week leading into Spokane's Western Hockey League playoff-opening series with the Everett Silvertips, Chiefs coach Bill Peters kept mentioning the phrase "battle level" – all but assuring that whoever had the most would come out on top. So far, so good.

Chiefs wield power in Game 1

In eight regular-season games against the Everett Silvertips, the Spokane Chiefs scored four power-play goals in 45 attempts. After 60 minutes and eight power-play opportunities on Friday night, the Chiefs had equaled that number.

Quarterback derby under way

At 6-foot-4, 314 pounds, you'd think a guy like Harrison Nikolao would be easy to remember. But when former Northern Arizona quarterback Jason Murietta was told Nikolao was a former Eastern Washington University lineman – meaning the two played against each other in the Big Sky Conference – it didn't ring a bell.

Chiefs expect tough series with Silvertips

Bill Peters doesn't expect to be done with the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs by March 28. The Spokane coach knows his Chiefs have a tough series ahead.

Chiefs lose shot at division title

KENNEWICK –There will be a vacant space on the Spokane Arena wall where the Spokane Chiefs would have loved nothing more then to hang a U.S. Division banner. But after all their success in one of the best seasons in franchise history, and a game that more than lived up to its billing, it turned out that it just wasn't meant to be.

Chiefs honor trio

Three Chiefs played their final regular-season game on Arena ice Friday night. Forwards Chris Bruton, Judd Blackwater and David Rutherford – Spokane's three 20-year-olds – were honored in a pregame ceremony, where the team also announced its 2007-08 award winners.
