Reunion won’t be friendly

Spokane coach Adam Shackleford turned on the lights at the Shock practice facility Friday and had a brief conversation with Antwone Savage and Andrico Hines. Shackleford didn't want to take away from their practice time, so he talked to them for a minute and told them it was good to see them.

Set to make the jump

Dustin Tokarski admits it. The Spokane Chiefs goalie isn't one of those players who will be golfing or waiting for someone to call and tell him if and when his name is called this Saturday during the second day of the NHL draft.

No quit in Rogers: Shock DB overcomes obstacles

There were mornings in high school that Nygel Rogers watched the bus pass by him at 6. Only he wasn't on his way to school. The veteran Spokane Shock defensive back was heading home from a night out with friends, and he didn't hear anything about it from his mom. "I don't want to say she didn't care – because she did care – but she didn't stress on me about coming in the house late or where I was," Rogers said. "She let me choose my friends and experience life through trials and tribulations."

Cunningham signs with Pirates

Jarek Cunningham assumed his next big step would be to play baseball for Arizona State University. But the recent Mt. Spokane High School graduate instead opted to sign a professional baseball contract Saturday with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who drafted the shortstop in the 18th round (534th overall) of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft a little more than a week ago.

Shock set to take on rival Fever

It's not time for the Spokane Shock to order a new Western Division banner – yet. They can probably go ahead and start thinking about the postseason, though.

Sauk on roll with Rattlers

Spokane Shock coach Adam Shackleford was only half-joking when he told Matt Sauk he doesn't want him back on the coaching staff anytime soon. Sauk, who began the indoor football season as an arenafootball2 assistant coach with the Shock (10-0), signed a contract with the AFL's Arizona Rattlers in mid-May and has been on a roll since.

Volunteer moves up through ranks

Fifteen years ago, Pete Johnson opened his Sunday newspaper and decided to act. The story cited that several Hoopfest court monitors had simply failed to show up for their volunteer duties in downtown Spokane the day before. So Johnson jumped on his mountain bike.

Burn prove no match for top-ranked Shock

BOISE – The distance between first and second place in the West Division continues to grow. Spokane quarterback Nick Davila completed 26 of 39 passes, threw for seven touchdowns and hauled in one as the top-ranked Shock remained unbeaten with a 68-51 over the Boise Burn in front of 4,530 Qwest Arena fans on Saturday.

Unbeaten Shock invade Boise

They have the top ranking – at least for now. They are also the last unbeaten team in the arenafootball2 league. Coach Adam Shackleford thinks that's great and all, but that's not what he puts stock in. The top priority for the Spokane Shock is still to win a third straight West Division title.

Gilliam picks perfect time

Sergio Gilliam has already set his sights on another record. The Spokane defensive back broke the single-season franchise record for interceptions last weekend when he picked off his 11th pass of the season in the Shock's 52-42 victory over the Stockton Lightning.

Chiefs bring Home Memorial Cup

KITCHENER, Ontario – Helmets went airborne. Sticks and gloves scattered. Goalie Dustin Tokarski was mobbed on the north end of the ice as time expired. After 17 years, the Memorial Cup is returning to Spokane.

Hail to the Chiefs!

KITCHENER, Ontario – There will be no looking back and saying 'what if.' Days from now – even years from now – the Spokane Chiefs can look back and think 'remember when.' Overage team captain Chris Bruton will recall setting up two goals within a minute in his final game as a Chief.

Tokarski named MVP

KITCHENER, Ontario – Team success has always been more important than personal achievement for Dustin Tokarski. But when the NHL draft takes place next month in Ottawa, you can bet the ninth-ranked goaltender in North America – who backstopped the Spokane Chiefs to Western Conference, Western Hockey League and Memorial Cup titles this season – will hear his name called.

Memorable journey ends here

KITCHENER, Ontario – The moment isn't lost on Chris Bruton, but if it has truly hit the Chiefs captain that tonight he will suit up for his final shift in a Spokane sweater, he isn't letting on. That makes perfect sense. Bruton will have ample time to look back and reflect on the ups and downs of a memorable four-year career in the Western Hockey League later.

Chiefs revved for big game

KITCHENER, Ontario – In an encased display of vintage hockey sweaters and memorabilia, Dustin Tokarski finally finds what he has been searching for. "You see that?" the Spokane Chiefs goaltender asks, pointing to a photograph in the upper left corner of the exhibit.

Chiefs will play Kitchener for Cup

KITCHENER, Ontario – The total number of goals represented every time they've met in the postseason. Of course the fact that one team did all the scoring made it a huge disappointment for the other. It also made it the most lopsided Memorial Cup semifinal since the tournament changed to a four-team format in 1983.

Spurgeon sibling rivalry paid off

KITCHENER, Ontario – Sticks were thrown often and refrigerators were disposable in the unfinished basement of their old Edmonton, Alberta, digs. It was there in the cemented underground that Spokane Chiefs alternate captain Jared Spurgeon and his older brother Tyler spent countless hours in the throes of punching pucks – and each other – on their makeshift hockey rink. No ice, a net on one side of the room and a refrigerator on the opposite end – which served as the second net.

Chiefs plan to take in sights over break

KITCHENER, Ontario – Now they wait. For the Spokane Chiefs, who wrapped up their round-robin schedule with a 3-1 victory over the Gatineau Olympiques on Tuesday night, the automatic berth into Sunday's Memorial Cup championship means four days in between games.

Chiefs will play for Cup

KITCHENER, Ontario – Bobby Brett joined general manager Tim Speltz and head coach Bill Peters in the press box with two minutes remaining in the Belleville-Gatineau game Monday night. The Spokane Chiefs owner wanted to be the first to congratulate the two.

Chiefs’ Bowman, Wahl putting on a show

KITCHENER, Ontario – Welcome back to the Drayson Bowman and Mitch Wahl show. If you're just tuning in, note the fact that the Spokane Chiefs' first-line forwards on-again performance of their old light-the-lamp act isn't necessarily a surprise. After all, Bowman highlighted his team-leading 82-point regular season with 42 goals while Wahl finished second with 20 goals and 53 assists.

Chiefs upend top-ranked tournament hosts

KITCHENER, Ontario – It was about time quality trumped quantity. After watching 20 combined goals in two overtime games, defense and good goaltending were due to make their debut at the Kitchener Auditorium.

Chiefs prove bullheaded

KITCHENER, Ontario – First there was the good. The Spokane Chiefs had taken a relatively quick three-goal lead in the first period Saturday and looked surprisingly rhythmic after a 10-day layoff since their last game.

Into the fire against Kitchener

KITCHENER, Ontario – With a collective effort almost 5 minutes into overtime, the Spokane Chiefs were able to check the top priority off their Memorial Cup list of things to do. "It's a big thing to get the first win," said forward Mitch Wahl, who finished with a goal and an assist in the Chiefs' 5-4 round-robin victory over the Belleville Bulls on Saturday night. "We had the lead and then we dropped it, but we came back and got the win, so we'll take that and move on and hopefully be better next game."

Chiefs emphasize opener

KITCHENER, Ontario – There are no second chances to make a first impression, and here at the Memorial Cup, first impressions are everything. "It's absolutely huge," said Spokane coach Bill Peters, whose Western Hockey League champion Chiefs practiced Friday morning in preparation for their tournament opener today against the Belleville Bulls.

Kitchener captures opener

KITCHENER, Ontario – If the opening game of the Memorial Cup tournament offers a sign of what's to come, it's going to be a wild ride. Justin Azevedo buried the puck in the top right corner of the net to give the host Kitchener Rangers a 6-5 victory over the Gatineau Olympiques in front of 6,705 fans packed into the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on Friday night.
