Eastern-MSU rivalry always matters

As they warmed up at Bobcat Stadium on a pleasant Friday afternoon, the Eastern Washington players also warmed to the subject of a rivalry with Montana State that’s among the biggest in the Big Sky Conference, even though today's game is a nonconference matchup.

Women’s soccer: Eagles thrilled over plethora of goals

The Eastern Washington soccer players have rediscovered an old friend: the net. Thanks to a new coach, an aggressive style and an influx of new talent, the Eagles have nine goals in four matches so far this year. That ranks 57th out of 332 Division I programs, and is just three goals shy of their entire output last season.

WSU honors legendary sportscaster Keith Jackson

PULLMAN – Raising a flag is easy when you’ve been a standard-bearer for most of your life. Especially when you’ve come home to the place where it all began, to “my kind of people,” sportscasting legend Keith Jackson said Saturday night after he tugged at the rope that hoisted the Washington State University flag above Martin Stadium.

After emotional games against Sam Houston State and Washington, this week’s bye comes at a perfect time for Eastern Washington. “It’s good to get refocused, get regrouped,” linebacker Cody McCarthy said Tuesday afternoon as the second-ranked Eagles get two weeks to prepare for a nonconference game on Sept. 20 at No. 17 Montana State.

Baldwin calls Adams’ play against UW his best yet

On further review, Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams looked as good on film as he did to 62,861 fans last weekend in Seattle. “That was probably the best I’ve ever seen him play,” Eagles coach Beau Baldwin said Tuesday as the Eagles opened practice three days after a 59-52 loss at Washington.

Eastern defense gets time to regroup

SEATTLE – As the Eastern Washington football players exited the big stage Saturday afternoon, they did it to mixed reviews. The offense was staggering; the defense, simply staggered – by injuries, the emotion of two huge games in three weeks, and finally by a dominant Washington offense that rolled up 536 yards in a 59-52 Eagles loss that perhaps could have gone the other way.

SEATTLE – Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams always shines brightest in the limelight. And what better opportunity than a sun-drenched day at Husky Stadium, in front of a national television audience and the biggest crowd he’s ever entertained?

EWU notes: Late turnover helps Huskies slip by Eags

SEATTLE – In a game that offered Eastern Washington little margin for error, the Eagles committed just enough mistakes Saturday to make an upset over Washington that much tougher. Eastern eventually recovered from a fumbled kickoff return that gave Washington an early 14-0 lead, but a late turnover by true freshman wide receiver Terence Grady almost put the game out of reach.

Huskies outlast Eastern in high-flying showdown

SEATTLE – For one day, track was back at Husky Stadium. In a sprint from start to finish Saturday afternoon, Washington had just enough kick to outlast Eastern Washington 59-52, leaving the fans as breathless as the football players.

Eastern won’t necessarily pass on every down to keep up with Huskies

SEATTLE – As they took the field on a sunny Friday afternoon at Husky Stadium, the Eastern Washington football players paused to appreciate the scenery – and a few intangibles – for today’s big nonconference game at Washington. Motivation was all around them during the walkthrough: for some, it was the seats they filled as purple-clad youngsters; for others, the big-time stage they were denied as high school recruits; and for a few veterans, the end zone where another Eastern team lost heartbreakingly three years ago. Three years later, nothing has changed. The Huskies are bigger, faster and favored – and Eastern will counter by doing what it does best – which isn’t necessarily throwing the ball on every down.
