It only got edgier once Afif left left the outdoor game behind and joined the Arena Football League. “There’s no place to hide,” said Afif, nine-game starter at offensive left tackle last year for the Spokane Shock and now the protector of quarterback Erik Meyer’s blind side.

Talara Frost brought quite a résumé when she was hired last year to coach the Northwest Christian girls basketball team. A former college player, coach, marketing manager and currently a counselor at Whitworth University, Frost brought all those skills to the court and the locker room to lead the Crusaders to a 26-1 record going into today’s State 2B tournament at the Arena.

The energy of Tuesday’s basketball practice at Reese Court carried over into the media interviews, as coach Jim Hayford and star guard Tyler Harvey joked in front of the cameras. “Before the season, I predicted that Tyler would break the school record for 3s in a season, lead the Big Sky Conference in scoring with a 23-point average, play 38 minutes a game and get straight-A’s in the classroom,” Hayford said as he put Harvey in a playful headlock.

It promises to be another hair-raising season in the Big Sky Conference. Eastern Washington linebacker Ronnie Hamlin, a Buck Buchanan Award candidate and already the third-leading tackler in school history, has been granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA, the school announced Tuesday.

Wellpinit’s drive to the state basketball tournament has been powered largely by center Brodie Ford, but the Redskins found a few more horses under the engine Friday night. Facing a pesky Entiat team in a 1B Regional game at Mt. Spokane High School, Wellpinit finally sealed the deal with defense in the fourth quarter of a 64-48 win that sends the Redskins to next week’s state tournament at the Spokane Arena.

It wasn’t exactly a comeback, the near-miracle Shadle Park conjured up Friday night. It was more of a “clawback,” 6 minutes of scrappiness at both ends of the court that fueled a 55-51 win over Kennewick and earned the Highlanders a spot in next week’s State 3A tournament in Tacoma.

Whitworth took some time to get into its comfort zone Thursday night, and that may be a good thing. Hoopfest director Rick Steltenpohl will step down after this year

Hoopfest executive director Rick Steltenpohl said Wednesday he will step down later this year after the basketball tournament’s 25th iteration. Along with Hoopfest events project manager Aaron Magner, Steltenpohl said he plans to found a nationwide company specializing in events like Spokane’s successful 3-on-3 tournament.
