EWU’s McDonald good fit in talented secondary

The two-lane streets and wheat fields beyond are only two reminders that Tevin McDonald is far from Los Angeles. The differences end at Roos Field, where McDonald, a junior safety at Eastern Washington, has worked and played since transferring from UCLA last spring. “It is a lot different, but I’ve adjusted,” McDonald said. “It’s been a positive experience here in Cheney, and I’m excited to go to war with my teammates.”

The young linebackers at Eastern Washington are counting on some run support this season. The moral support is already in place, just ahead of them in the depth chart, in the form of veterans Ronnie Hamlin, Cody McCarthy and J.C Agen.

College women’s soccer preview: Making strides

The Washington State soccer team got out of its comfort zone last season under new coach Keidane McAlpine, then found something even better: a return trip to the NCAA tournament. The key, McAlpine said, was encouraging a more up-tempo approach despite the fact that the Cougars had reached the NCAA three of the previous four years by playing a more conservative style.

Running backs aplenty for Eagles

Grab some more chairs, because the running back committee at Eastern Washington just got even bigger. With the Eagles’ top two returning backs already questionable for the opener at Oregon State, there will be room for some new faces, along with an old one who can’t wait to get back on the field.

Eagles work on situations at scrimmage

Eastern Washington football coach Beau Baldwin promised that Saturday’s scrimmage would be very “situational.” For a few players, the situations were a little out of the ordinary.

EWU moved quickly after assault in athletes’ dorm

For six weeks in late summer, the student-athletes at Eastern Washington University are athletes first. Until classes begin in late September, they eat, sleep and breathe soccer, volleyball, cross country and football. Their only books are playbooks dispensed by the athletic department; so are the food and the housing arrangements for all incoming freshman athletes, which until a year ago were all contained at Dressler Hall – located just across Washington Street from the school’s athletic facilities.

Depth maintains D-line’s quality

Despite losing three starters, the Eastern Washington defensive line is hardly in rebuilding mode. Assistant coach Ryan Sawyer doesn’t even need to reload, thanks partly to the Eagles’ emphasis on rotating up to 10 players per game.

Special teams go back to basics

Happy returns, indeed. Nine months later, Shaquille Hill still gets teased about his kickoff return last year against Illinois State, the one he was taking to the house before dropping the ball on the doorstep.
