Next phase of freeway work is a real blast

Short-term closures of U.S. Highway 395 near the Little Spokane River will occur over the next several weeks as construction workers set off explosives to excavate the site of an interchange with the new north Spokane freeway. The blasting started two weeks ago to build the connection between the freeway and U.S. 395 in the vicinity of Wandermere Road. It is expected to continue for about another month.

Morning fire guts iconic Cliff House

A landmark mansion that overlooks Spokane Valley will be rebuilt after an early morning fire that gutted the historic building’s interior, the general manager said Wednesday. “We can rebuild it,” Jim van Loben Sels said of Arbor Crest Cliff House, 4705 N. Fruithill Road. “It’s not burned to the ground.”

Three feared dead in fire

Three people are missing and presumed dead after an early morning apartment fire Tuesday in the historic Curlew School building, authorities said. Two of the missing may be children, confirmed Ferry County Prosecutor Mike Sandona, who also serves as coroner. No names or identities were given.
