County money may back arena, center

Spokane County commissioners on Tuesday said they are willing to provide a financial backup on municipal bonds that will be sold to finance expansions of the Spokane Convention Center and Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. The backing in the form of a contingent loan guarantee would calm jittery bond investors and bring millions of dollars in savings on interest costs, officials said.

Getting There: CdA’s Government Way widening starts today

A half-mile section of Government Way from Dalton to Hanley avenues in Coeur d’Alene will be under construction for the next four months in a long-awaited widening project. More than $3 million is being spent to expand the roadway from two lanes to four lanes plus a center turn lane to serve the busy commercial area north of Interstate 90.

Cool weather is forecast for race

The National Weather Service is forecasting a Bloomsday not unlike many of them in past years: cool and cloudy. Race time temperatures in the middle to upper 40s with light wind should be followed by a high of 60. The early morning hours are forecast to be dry and partly cloudy, but a 20 percent chance of showers creeps into the forecast by late morning even as cloud cover diminishes.

Event, grants encourage clean wood burning

People in the Spokane area who like to burn wood to stay warm might consider attending a family-friendly event this weekend on how to ensure wood is dry and seasoned for clean burning. The event will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Spokane Valley fire station at 10319 E. Sprague Ave. It is being organized through the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency.

Land near Fairchild readied for future

Spokane County is launching an environmental assessment on 140 acres it owns near Fairchild Air Force Base in an effort to make the land attractive to employers who would bring jobs to the region. The county bought the land as part of the $6.2 million rerouting of the Geiger Spur rail line that serves industry on the West Plains.

County wants to cut jail population

Spokane County commissioners on Tuesday asked county staff to take steps to reduce inmate populations in anticipation of Geiger Corrections Center closing. A budget move by the city of Spokane to send 50 or more inmates to cheaper beds in Benton County is prompting the county to consider closing Geiger and squeezing the remaining inmates into the county jail.

Council revamps initiative process

A revamping of Spokane’s system of bringing initiative measures to the ballot won approval Monday night following several hours of testimony. The divided council voted 4-3 in favor of an ordinance to require the city attorney’s office to write initiative ballot summaries. It also requires a fiscal statement on the cost of the measure.

The popular arterial route on the west side of Whitworth University is going to be closed to through traffic later this spring for major reconstruction, including installation of a roundabout. Emergency management officials in North Idaho on Friday said the rush of water from mountain rain and snowmelt was stopping short of serious flooding. Levees and sandbags were holding at vulnerable locations as the rush of runoff neared its crest.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers took steps on Wednesday to guard against flooding on several Inland Northwest rivers over the next several days. Rain combined with snowmelt is threatening to push a number of rivers in the region over their banks. Some have already reached flood stage.

Thunderstorms are moving north out of Oregon this afternoon, and will provide a leading edge to what forecasters said will be a period of soaking rain over the next 24 hours or more. The rain is expected to worsen flooding problems across the region.
