Getting There: Railroad bed will be used as trail in Valley

Spokane County commissioners have paved the way for a new multiple-use trail on former railroad property east of Appleway Boulevard in Spokane Valley. The commissioners last week approved a resolution authorizing an agreement with Spokane Valley allowing trail construction as well as what is being called a “linear park.”

Mild winter forecast for Pacific Northwest

The U.S. Climate Prediction Center has issued an El Nino watch for re-emergence of warm water in the tropical Pacific Ocean later this year, a condition that could lead to a mild winter in the Pacific Northwest. El Nino can bring either dry or wet conditions to the Inland Northwest, but it is consistent in bringing milder temperatures, forecasters said Monday.

Sheriff backs sales tax to fix budget shortfall

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich said Tuesday that the ability of his office to fight crime is increasingly endangered by funding cuts, and he is proposing a new sales tax to help shore up its budget. He is asking the county commissioners to place a sales tax increase of two-tenths of a cent on the November ballot and restrict the money raised to law enforcement and criminal justice.

FedEx donates practice plane to Spokane airport

Spokane International Airport took possession Wednesday of a well-traveled Boeing 727-200 through a donation by its owner, FedEx Express. The plane will be moved to a corner of the airport and used for training by firefighters, police and community college aerospace students.
