Garland District stunned by fire

Spokane’s Garland District residents and business owners were in shock Monday after a Sunday night fire ravaged two neighborhood landmarks – Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle at Garland and Post, and Ferguson’s Cafe next door. “We are heartbroken,” said Lisa Kulp, a server at Ferguson’s. “I can’t believe it happened. I am still in shock.”

Fire, explosion damage pegged at $3 million

A fire and explosion Monday that blew glass out of the windows and charred parts of a Spokane Valley office building caused an estimated $3 million in damage. Assistant Fire Marshal Bill Clifford on Tuesday said investigators are examining a nitrous oxide tank that apparently blew up at the start of the fire around 7 a.m.

Spokane Valley medical offices damaged by fire, explosion

Fire investigators this afternoon were poring through the rubble of a morning fire today in an oral surgery office on East Mission Avenue in Spokane Valley. The fire appeared to have started in a room containing tanks of oxygen and nitrous oxide, said Assistant Fire Marshal Bill Clifford.

Geiger Boulevard warehouse razed in fire

Warehouse owner Bob Yeager watched firefighters Wednesday douse the smoldering rubble that once held nearly a lifetime of work. A 4 a.m. fire at 2006 S. Geiger Blvd. brought down the southwestern half of the building that Yeager had occupied for 40 years. He built the warehouse himself over a long period, doing a section at a time when he had enough money, he said.

An estimated 27.3 million Americans are expected to travel 50 miles or more by automobile this holiday weekend, up from the 27.2 million who traveled by personal vehicles last Labor Day.
