Snow packs it in for now, but rain in forecast

One day after a Wednesday snowstorm tied up morning traffic on Interstate 90 in Spokane, forecasters were predicting that much of the snow pack below 4,000 feet in elevation will succumb to rain and milder temperatures by Friday. The melting snow may send a flush of water into creeks, streams, catch basins and fields.

Less snow expected in storm; thaw, rain to follow

National Weather Service forecasters on Tuesday downsized predicted snowfall amounts for a storm expected to surge inland through today. They were calling for 3 to 7 inches in Spokane and 5 to 9 inches in Coeur d’Alene, with most accumulations occurring through about noon today and highs reaching 35 degrees in both cities.

Heavy snow, then warming could lead to rising rivers

A major winter storm is bearing down on the Inland Northwest today and could bring snow accumulations of 9 inches to Spokane and Coeur d’Alene and a foot or more in areas north. A strong low pressure system is drawing milder air off the subtropical Pacific Ocean, and that moisture will slam into an arctic air mass currently in place over the region.

For roadways, major work; for drivers, major headache

Drivers in the Spokane area are going to have another construction season of slowdowns under a series of major projects planned for Interstate 90 and Division Street. Studded tires have caused so much damage to the concrete pavement on the Sunset Hill that the Washington State Department of Transportation is now going to spend $7.8 million fixing the freeway in a project expected to last until 2012.

Dryer fire cancels classes at Post Fall High School

A small fire in a clothes dryer forced evacuation Tuesday morning of Post Falls High School as well as cancellation of classes for the day, officials said. The fire began about 7:45 a.m. and quickly was extinguished, but it filled the school’s gymnasium with smoke, said Jim Lyon, fire information officer for Kootenai County Fire and Rescue in Post Falls.

Reconstruction keeps Cliff House’s historic feel

A year after being gutted by fire, the Cliff House at Arbor Crest Wine Cellars has been rebuilt into a modern structure that retains its historic look. The original 1924 landmark stood high above Spokane Valley until a fire on Dec. 23, 2009, forced the family winery to dismantle it to the ground and rebuild it with new materials.

For the first time in more than a decade, air-quality authorities issued a stage-2 burning ban Monday, meaning all indoor wood-burning and outdoor burning is prohibited except in homes where there’s no other source of heat. The Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency posted the ban after air quality deteriorated quickly during the day.

Downed trees cut power as snow piles up

A major snowstorm that swept across the Inland Northwest on Wednesday triggered widespread accidents, closed major highways and knocked out power to thousands. At one point Wednesday night, Avista Utilities had 6,600 customers without power. The outages affected customers as far west as Davenport, Wash., and as far east as Kellogg, and from Sandpoint to Deary, Idaho.
