LC, Mead face numbers game at regional

The odds are against the Greater Spokane League when Lewis and Clark and Mead travel to Richland tomorrow for the regional volleyball tournament – but don’t bet against them. When the Columbia Basin Big Nine stacked the playoff deck against the GSL, they really stacked it for regional tournaments such as volleyball.

Pope easily grabs state cross country title

When Jeff Pope was a Valley Christian sophomore he thought there was a possibility he could win the State B high school cross country race before settling on third place. “My legs gave out at the end and I was third by .001 of a second,” he said.

Pullman prepares for tough Tumwater

Pullman won the Great Northern League football title. The Greyhounds’ reward is a first-round date with State 2A power Tumwater in the first round of the state playoffs. “I don’t understand,” said coach Bill Peterson. “Tumwater has a great tradition and always puts out a great product. This one’s no different.”

Mead wins in 4A

Three goals are usually plenty in soccer, and Mead had that many in the first half of its first-round State 4A tournament match against Kamiak on Tuesday at Albi Stadium. It turned out the Panthers needed them all in a 3-2 triumph to move into Saturday’s round of eight.

Mead lives up to its title reputation

PASCO – Washington cross country teams learned that in Spokane, distance tradition is difficult to intrude upon and the legend won’t readily disappear. The Mead Panthers boys, relegated to also-ran status after a poor effort in regional, saved their best race for last to win the State 4A championship and leave their coach in tears for the second straight year at Sun Willows Golf Course, extending the Greater Spokane League’s stranglehold on the title trophy to 21 straight years.

NC makes it three

PASCO – The sun made an appearance to illuminate a rainbow in the background Saturday afternoon at Sun Willows Golf Course as the North Central Indians took the awards podium to accept another State 3A cross country state championship. The scene couldn’t have been more appropriate for seven racers whom coach Jon Knight called heroes to their community.

CV rallies past Richland

RICHLAND – Central Valley had been there before, staring at a 14-0 deficit before it knew what happened. But just like that early-season game against Lewis and Clark, the Bears were unfazed Friday. As coach Rick Giampietri watched his grandson Tyler Simmet turn in a season-high rushing performance and marveled again at the wizardry of quarterback Blake Bledsoe, the Bears reeled off 28 straight points on the way to a 35-20 victory over the Richland Bombers at Fran Rish Stadium.

Mt. Spokane scores last to win shootout

RICHLAND – On a balmy night at Fran Rish Stadium, defense was pretty much a bystander when Mt. Spokane and Hanford squared off in a 3A state-qualifying football game. But credit the Wildcats’ defense with a huge comethrough during a wild and wacky 42-39 triumph that sends them to the first round of the playoffs next weekend against East Valley.

Five teams vie for state grid playoffs

Throw everything that has transpired out the window. It’s a new season for five Greater Spokane League football teams, all of them with a common goal. With one victory tonight, four of them will qualify for state playoffs.

Fleet front-runner

Andy Kimpel came out of nowhere as a freshman to place fifth the next season in the State 3A cross country championships. But his coach at North Central, Jon Knight, wouldn’t necessarily call him a distance running prodigy.

Sisters on opposite sides of the net

Lewis and Clark hosts Saturday’s 4A and 3A Greater Spokane League district volleyball tournaments and if form holds in the double-elimination event, stepsisters Madison Dahlstrom and Allyson Hanson will face off against each other one more time. Hanson plays for regular-season league champion Lewis and Clark. Dahlstrom is an outside hitter for second-place league finisher Mead.

Ferris cross country peaks at right time

Ferris cross country coach Mike Hadway was asked to explain the Saxons’ rise from mid-pack Greater Spokane League team to champions of the eastern regional meet on Saturday. “I guess I’m kind of speechless,” Hadway said.

DP girls offset collapse

Deer Park girls cross country coach Wes Player had resigned himself to the inevitable. The Stags’ season, which included a perfect Great Northern League record, appeared ended after DP star Chantel Duenich collapsed about one-half mile from the finish while running near the front of the state-qualifying 2A races Saturday at Plantes Ferry Park.

Bullpups run over Tigers

The proof is in the pudding next week when the Greater Spokane League squares off with the Columbia Basin Big Nine in crossover football games. But some teams, Gonzaga Prep in particular, could argue the GSL deserves added State 4A playoff opportunities. The Bullpups manhandled Lewis and Clark 28-7 in their league finale Friday night at Albi Stadium, but this year only two from the GSL get that playoff opportunity. Those two representatives are Ferris, which earned a share of its second straight league title by belting University 45-14 at U-Hi, and co-champion Central Valley (both 8-1 overall and 7-1 in league) this year.

Bears clinch title tie

One-half a football game was good enough Thursday night for Central Valley to claim a share of its first Greater Spokane League championship since the 1997 state title year. The Bears (8-1, 7-1 GSL) rode a big defensive hit at home by J.C. Agen that resulted in an end-zone fumble recovery on the way to a three-touchdown second half and comeback 20-10 victory over Mead (5-4, 5-4).

Boise State’s Hall returns to area for exhibition

A year ago, Bonners Ferry product and Boise State wrestler Adam Hall fell just short of earning All-American in his first NCAA Division I championships. Hobbled by a knee injury, he was one of nine Broncos NCAA qualifiers, four of whom reached the round of 12 in their respective weight classes. Another was University High graduate Cory Fish.

Lift from ex-skier

While future Greater Spokane League athletes were cutting their teeth on youth football as youngsters, Central Valley’s Blake Bledsoe was on the slopes. Bledsoe was a regionally ranked junior ski racer which left no time for the game, despite his football lineage.

Pierce learned growing impact of concussions

During senior night at Gonzaga Prep on Oct. 22, Kaylie Pierce took her accustomed spot at center back in the Bullpups’ starting soccer lineup. Unlike the previous two years with the Bullpups, the move was largely symbolic and her stay on the field relatively brief. “I got to play for two minutes, it might have been a little longer,” Pierce said. “It felt amazing, because I hadn’t played since March. And it was really hard coming off the field.”

Stags make great strides in GNL

Deer Park football coach Keith Stamps knew this summer his Stags would be much better, based upon close outcomes a year ago, weight-room commitment and camp efforts in the off-season. But he couldn’t have envisioned they’d be playing for undisputed first place in the Great Northern League entering the ninth week of the season. They’re doing so despite having lost starting quarterback Ryan Jorgensen to an injury three weeks ago.

LC savors upset win over Ferris

Tom Yearout reiterated what he said a year ago, after winning Lewis and Clark’s first state football championship. “To define a season solely on the playoffs is not what high school football’s about,” he said on Monday following the Tigers’ 15-14 upset victory over Ferris.

Thrillers lead GSL into final week

With so much riding on the Greater Spokane League football showdown between second-place teams Central Valley and Gonzaga Prep and the nerves the contest engendered, it seemed inevitable that the outcome would come down to which team committed the last gaffe. The host Bullpups made two mistakes in the game’s final 6 minutes Friday night, enabling the Bears (7-1 overall, 6-1 GSL) to rally for the lead and hang on at the end for a 24-23 victory that brought them closer to one of two regional playoff games for potential state berths.

Opportunistic Panthers rout University

It’s been a star-crossed season with roller coaster results for Mead football this year, but things were definitely upbeat for the Panthers Thursday on senior recognition night at Joe Albi Stadium. Six second-quarter touchdowns, three of them coming in the final 1 minute, 10 seconds, propelled Mead (5-3) to a 55-0 romp over University (2-6).

It’s brother vs. brother in LC-Ferris game

The game is always meaningful when South Hill rivals Ferris and Lewis and Clark meet. More so this year for LC’s Tigers, whose football season hinges on the outcome of Friday’s renewal at Joe Albi Stadium. But it takes on added emphasis this year in Bill and Jan Beschel’s household. One son, junior Conor, starts on the line for LC. Another, sophomore Dillon, starts on the line for the Saxons.

NC boys run off all rivals

Conditions were ideal for Wednesday’s District 8 4A/3A cross country meet at Wandermere Golf Course that had something for nearly everybody. North Central remained in a league of its own. Andy Kimpel and Jeff Howard finished first and second as the Indians defeated the best the league could throw at them for an easy boys team championship.
