East bests West

The annual East-West High School All-State Football Summer Classic at Central Valley lived up to its billing on a hot Thursday night. But for followers of the Greater Spokane League, the outcome was eerily familiar. Ferris quarterback Jeff Minnerly orchestrated not one, but two comebacks with both arm and foot, the final one a 2-yard pass to Moses Lake's Ryan Coulston with 13 seconds remaining in the East's 17-14 victory.

Bears, Titans chase Tigers for division

Central Valley won the battle, University the war – as it were – and the two American Legion AA baseball teams continue to chase Lewis and Clark for South Division supremacy. CV beat U-Hi 6-3 for the championship of the Bear Bash tournament. Winning pitcher Scott Simon had three hits including a double. But University (8-2) defeated CV (12-3) for the second time in league, 6-5 last week, with a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. University had won the first meeting 1-0.

GSL foes team up

Jeff Minnerly and Bryan Karwacki quarterbacked their respective Greater Spokane League football teams at Ferris and Gonzaga Prep and will be teammates in the fall at Eastern Washington University. One will play offense, the other defense in college.

Shadle sails into 4A semis

TACOMA – Like clockwork, a rain shower began falling at 9 a.m. as teams opened the State 4A softball tournament. The Highlanders this year have been there, done that.
