Panthers pick up the pace in GSL

Host Mead boys and girls cross country teams remained undefeated Wednesday during the second week of Greater Spokane League competition, each improving to 6-0 midway through the season. The girls did so by the skins of their teeth over district rival Mt. Spokane.

Deer Park, WV enjoy 3-0 starts

When was the last time West Valley and Deer Park started a football season 3-0? For the Stags, it was back in 2000; for the Eagles, you’d have to go back even further.

Shadle’s defense stands up to EV

It was a classic case of the irresistible force meeting the immoveable object – and in two overtimes, the largely immoveable object prevailed in a Thursday night Greater Spokane League football showdown between 3A playoff aspirants. Shadle Park (2-1) quarterback Chris Donohue bulled into the end zone from 3 yards out with the winning touchdown in the Highlanders’ 20-14 victory over East Valley (1-2) at Albi Stadium.

Mt. Spokane boys edge LC in season opener

The race was over before the race was decided when Greater Spokane League cross country began with a taut early-season meet Wednesday at Ferris. Ferris’ Adam Thorne had put considerable distance between himself and fellow junior standout, Mt. Spokane’s Allan Schroeder, to win in 16 minutes, 26 seconds at 5,000 meters.

State volleyball event saddled with late date

To err is human, to forgive divine – although these days it seems society is not in a forgiving mood. So when a mixup caused this year’s state volleyball tournaments in Kennewick to be scheduled a week later than anticipated, there was unhappiness in the coaching community. I heard about it last summer from Jack Hamann, the husband and assistant coach of Leslie Hamann at Garfield High in Seattle.

East Valley cleans up in Auburn

East Valley volleyball coach Jim Dorr got his fill of Hawaiian cuisine and his players feasted as well, winning last weekend’s Puget Sound Adidas Invitational Tournament in Auburn, Wash. This was the Knights’ third trip to the PNW, put on by Auburn Mountainview coach Momi Bowles, and first title. Dorr became friends with Bowles when she coached at University and North Central before moving west.

Same formula for LC

The personnel and style may have changed, but otherwise why mess with a tried and true formula? Lewis and Clark didn’t with a 28-7 victory Friday night over Mead in a football game between Greater Spokane League favorites at Joe Albi Stadium.

Just out of grasp

When Justin Muessy pounced on Shadle Park’s fumble of the opening kickoff and Rogers took a 7-0 lead barely a minute into the game, there was cause for early excitement in the Pirates’ camp. But not even two electrifying runs, by Jake Partridge and Cody Peterson, the latter giving Rogers a 21-20 third-quarter lead, could end the frustration of a losing streak dating back to 2004.

Gonzaga Prep joins the fold

Gonzaga Prep joins the league this year when Greater Spokane League slowpitch softball begins its sixth season today. The Bullpups debut at Rogers. In the first-game feature, last year’s runner-up Central Valley hosts third-place finisher Lewis and Clark. They will be among favorites this year.

They haven’t pirated A-11 offense, yet

Has anyone heard of the A-11 offense? The subject came up in talking to Rick Giampietri at an early Central Valley football practice. Word was that Rogers was implementing it and Giampietri feared a nightmarish time trying to defend against it. As it turned out, when the Bears and Pirates played on Friday the A-11 was nowhere to be seen. Giampietri said Rogers ran its regular Gun Option offense so well it wasn’t needed.

Nelson books it to new class

When is a defending cross country state champion not a defending state champion? In the case of Shadle Park junior Andrea Nelson, it’s when your school switches classifications.

Mead rivalry game a crowd-pleaser

For a first-night football game, the Mead-Mt. Spokane encounter had it all. Both teams entered with high expectations for a game fueled by intense rivalry. It ended a nail-biter in front of a large and appreciative crowd.

Kimpel leads deep NC boys

In the minds of participating coaches and runners, the second Tracy Walters Invitational cross country meet was more about end-of-summer training than it was the beginning of a competitive fall season. But Saturday’s boys race that completed action at Audubon Park certainly was competitive and had championship elements about it.

Sankey, Stockton help Bullpups run past EV

It took the anticipated Bishop Sankey era at Gonzaga Prep a while to get untracked, but once it did the smooth sophomore put a cramp in East Valley’s style. Sankey’s electrifying touchdown runs of 82 and 31 yards in the second half helped the Bullpups to a 31-13 Greater Spokane League triumph Friday in the debut of coach Dave McKenna.

Vets, new QB guide Ferris

Ferris borrowed a little something old and something new Thursday night which proved the perfect marriage during a 49-6 Greater Spokane League season-opening football victory over North Central at Joe Albi Stadium. Receiver Aaron Roberts and back Nate Tonani, both three-year veterans, accounted for 214 yards and six touchdowns and first-year quarterback Connor Halliday threw for 170 yards, including three scoring strikes to Roberts, in front of 2,039 fans.

GSL teams handed short end of stick

This likely isn’t the last word on the subject of the change in regional strategy when the Columbia Basin Big Nine Athletic Conference (CBBN) expanded to 11 4A schools. Because even though Greater Spokane League football is affected, cross country, volleyball and girls basketball could be impacted even more.

They know the drill

Rain uncharacteristically fell Wednesday morning before giving way to a balmy, breezy afternoon on the first day of football practice for area high schools. Two of them, Lewis and Clark and Almira/Coulee-Hartline, were back on the field some nine months removed from state championship seasons.

Legion regionals begin

Spokane’s American Legion Senior (AAA) League could conceivably send four teams to next week’s state tournament. The league could just as easily have no state entrants. A new regional format is scattering three teams, the Bandits, Northstars and Blue Devils, to the four winds.

Tonani learns on, off the field

While playing 7-on-7 football this summer, Ferris’ Nate Tonani learned something about the country and something about himself. Tonani played linebacker on the Washington team sponsored by the Seattle Seahawks that won the championship of the NFL High School Player Development Tournament (HSPD) Championships last week in New Orleans.

Olympians blow past All-Stars

A prevailing wind led to a show of softball power as the visiting United States Olympic team blew to a 31-0 victory over a group of Spokane All-Stars Thursday night at Franklin Park. The Olympians crushed seven home runs, two by Crystl Bustos, to erase any pretensions that the local team might hang in.
