Battle of the Bone started with rumble

The throaty roar of the motorcycles signaled the time of the year. It was Battle of the Bone night at University, the 13th renewal of the Central Valley-University wrestling rivalry. Little things meant a lot when Greater Spokane League boys basketball heavyweights Ferris and Shadle Park squared off Thursday. Top-ranked Ferris Saxons 15-0 after win over Mead

Ferris boys basketball players have discovered on a nightly basis that when you're No. 1 opponents are going to bring their best. It might not produce the most aesthetic result, as Tuesday night's 48-29 Greater Spokane League victory at Mead revealed, but some of that had to do with the Panthers' defensive intensity.

Previous loss makes EV wrestlers stronger

When is a loss a good loss? When it leads to an even better win. East Valley High School wrestlers were smarting from a 33-32 upset at Ferris a week ago before hosting University Tuesday in a makeup between Greater Spokane League contenders.

All they can B

It's not exactly the odd couple, but it's an interesting coupling, one designed to awaken basketball ghosts at Reardan. The Indians of yore won six State B basketball championships in eight finals appearances and made playing in the annual Spokane pageant a habit. Their 32 appearances are second all-time.

Mead throttles Ferris

Mead wrestling coach Phil McLean figured his team could win eight matches against Ferris in a Greater Spokane League showdown between a pair of two-loss teams. He didn't anticipate the landslide that was the Panthers' 51-16 rout Wednesday night at Mead.

Shadle Park's boys have won their last four basketball games by a total of eight points. Coach Tim Gaebe's response does not sound like someone who's concerned. "I enjoy it really," Gaebe said when asked if the recent string of last-second victories was cause for heart palpitations. "I love the competitiveness of it. The upside is good teams find a way to win and that's something you can hang your hat on."

Balanced CV prevails

When the game had ended and Central Valley boys basketball coach Rick Sloan browsed through the stat sheet of the Bears' victory over rival University, he was at a loss to pick out one defining performer. Ferris boys team an imposing opponent

Count Gonzaga Prep boys basketball coach Mike Haugen as one person duly impressed with Ferris following the Bullpups' 64-43 loss to the Saxons on Friday.
