LC, Ferris have eyes on title

The game figures to emphasize two ground-pounding football offenses when Lewis and Clark and Edmonds-Woodway meet in the State 4A football semifinals. But don't discount the quarterbacks, including Tigers' "point guard" Taylor Eglet. The second-year starting junior has just gotten warmed up this post-season.

Saxons reach semis

Graham-Kapowsin was missing the main ingredient in its offense. It might not have mattered, though, given the way unbeaten Ferris was operating Saturday on its way to the State 4A football semifinals. The Saxons (12-0) dominated on both offense and defense, handing the visiting Eagles (8-4) a 49-14 shellacking at Joe Albi Stadium to reach next week's semis at home against last year's state runner-up Bothell (12-0).

Odessa ousts Colton-Pullman Christian

In a football game filled with pivotal plays, a gutsy decision by Odessa's Travis Todd may have been the biggest. Facing fourth down at his 10, Todd faked a punt and passed to quarterback Ryan King for 23 yards that went a long way toward preserving the Tigers' come-from-behind-after-being-ahead 24-22 victory over Colton-Pullman Christian.

Albi doubleheader loaded

When Ferris and Pullman take part in an Albi Stadium state football doubleheader on Saturday, they'll both face hyphenated foes. The Saxons play third-year school Graham-Kapowsin in the opener for a spot in the State 4A semifinals. The Greyhounds follow a couple of hours later against Burlington-Edison. They'll have their hands full.

Karstetter makes most of genes

Maybe it's genetics, maybe it's timing and maybe it's that whole community- raising-a-child thing. Maybe it's because Jared Karstetter is good. Whatever the case, there's no denying that he has been blessed in his athletic career at Ferris.

Sodorff, West Valley on task so far in state soccer playoffs

West Valley senior defender Jordyn Sodorff was given a new task. Once fulfilled, she and the Eagles' soccer team were headed to the State 2A final four. WV plays Burlington-Edison at 10 a.m. Friday at Lakewood's Harry Lang Stadium in the school's first soccer state semifinal.

LC takes down Falcons

Lewis and Clark's special teams play has proved to be an adventure this season – "trials and tribulations" is how coach Tom Yearout put it. But the Tigers seemed to draw inspiration from a second-quarter gaffe in rallying past visiting Woodinville 21-7 in front of 2,385 fans during Saturday's State 4A football playoff game at Albi Stadium.

Ferris rallies, tops Mead

There's something about Ferris football and its penchant for slow starts. Given that, it's not wise to provide the Saxons with a window of opportunity. Mead did just that with turnovers and special teams breakdowns Friday night. Ferris took advantage and rolled to a 24-7 triumph in front of 3,809 fans at Albi Stadium in the first round of the State 4A football playoffs.

Ferris tops Mead in state opener

There's something about Ferris football and its penchant for slow starts. But it's not wise to provide the Saxons with a window of opportunity. Mead did just that with turnovers and special-teams breakdowns that Ferris took advantage of. The mistakes helped the Saxons roll to a 24-7 triumph in front of 3,809 fans at Albi Stadium in the first round of the State 4A football playoffs.

GSL teams expect passing interest

If history is an indicator and the weather cooperates, the football could be flying in two State 4A football games at Albi Stadium this weekend. Both Ferris, which faces a rematch tonight against league foe Mead, and Woodinville, Lewis and Clark's opponent on Saturday afternoon, employ versions of a spread offense.

NC, Mead boys claim cross country titles

What a weekend it was for North Side high school athletes competing in the state cross country championships at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. North Central boys, fulfilling early season expectations, proved best in show. The Indians' effort in obliterating the Class 3A field 36-110 over Seattle Prep, might have been just as dominating in any class.

Season’s endings fall short of hopes

It was a week when things didn't go entirely as planned for Spokane Valley high school athletes and teams. Last Tuesday, Central Valley's bid for a football state playoff was short-circuited by a 10-7 double-overtime tiebreaker format, and on Saturday, University's and East Valley's hopes for a state volleyball berth fell one match short each. Meanwhile, cross country wasn't without its heartache.

Mt. Spokane advances

The Mt. Spokane Wildcats are trying to make the most of their first trip to the State 3A girls soccer tournament. Two thread-the-needle passes led to easy breakaway goals in the first half and defense, led by Chelsea Jones, did the rest in a 2-0 victory over visiting Auburn Riverside.

GSL savors first football sweep

Gonzaga Prep football coach Dave Carson had his tongue firmly in cheek when he posed the question? "Where's the story about what's wrong with the Big Nine?" But the message was clear referencing all those "why can't the Greater Spokane League compete?" stories of past years.

Dragons, Cronrath, Rose win

PASCO – Where had Justin Rose been? Fourth in State 2A cross country last year and the highest-finishing underclassman, Rose spent much of this year running behind teammate Jake Hastings.

Mead, Nelson shine

PASCO – Shadle Park sophomore Andrea Nelson won state for the first time Saturday and Mead's boys repelled the state's sternest challenge to Greater Spokane League championship superiority, extending the league's string of successive team titles to 20. The unflappable Nelson dropped the gauntlet from the get-go, and, not content to simply hold on, increased her lead with every stride to scorch the opposition for a 16-second victory in the girls race at Sun Willows Golf Course.

Sun sets on Knights

An early dose of East Valley junior Dakota Lawson Friday night was not enough to halt Southridge's late-season football run of success. Mead ousts Bears

In a Greater Spokane League overtime tiebreaker football playoff game in which place-kicking figured to play a part and did, Chase Collings' leg swung true. Mead's kicker converted a 41-yard field goal for a 10-7 victory over Central Valley Friday night at Albi Stadium in the second overtime of the Kansas tiebreaker playoff.

Mead’s Reser sets record for TD passes

Overlooked in Mead 's victory over Mt. Spokane was Panthers quarterback Glen Reser's single-season record for passing touchdowns. Reser threw two TD passes in the game giving him 21 for the season. That topped the previous record of 20 by University's Brian Sherick, set back in 1992.
