Skyview takes busman’s holiday at U-Hi

What some teams will do for a wrestling experience. In the case of Skyview High competitors from Billings, Mont., it meant spending nearly a day of the past four traveling on a charter bus. The Falcons took the 10-hour drive west on Tuesday to compete in the two-day Best of the West team dual tournament in Pasco. On their way back home Friday, they stopped off at University for an 11 a.m. match before showering and reboarding the bus for the long drive home.

Two players quit teams

A pair of Spokane Valley high school boys basketball teams are soldiering on without two of their regulars. University's Tyler Olson and West Valley's Bryan Peterson, each the second-leading scorers on their teams at the time, both have quit their teams.

GSL girls basketball: LC wins clash of unbeatens

A quick start gave Lewis and Clark a cushion and the Tigers' depth took care of the details as foul-troubled LC remained unbeaten. They parlayed the early defense into a 54-40 win over visiting Central Valley, handing the Bears their first loss on Tuesday in Greater Spokane League girls basketball at Squinty Hunter Field House.

CV girls have been the surprise team in GSL

Who would have believed that the Central Valley girls basketball team would be the only other unbeaten team approaching tonight's Greater Spokane League game at league favorite Lewis and Clark? "I don't think anyone would have imagined going in our two teams both being 6-0," said first-year Bears coach Freddie Rehkow. "But you know, when I first took over I thought we could do some good things. When we started getting out there, if we played with a high level of intensity, I felt we had a good chance."

GSL BOYS: LC uses second-half surge to handle NC

While most of Lewis and Clark's team is still working to convert muscle memory from football to basketball, Sean Hoffman had his game fine-tuned Friday night at North Central. Hoffman, a 6-foot-7 junior, scored 17 of his game-high 29 points in the fourth quarter as the Tigers rallied in the second half to beat the Indians 61-51 for their second straight victory to open the Greater Spokane League season.

Taking his shot

When the history of North Central basketball is written, Nick Rijon's name will be listed among its contributors. The Indians' four-year varsity player has been prominent in their recent run of success.

GSL basketball: Ferris boys win late

A game that lived up to its advanced billing went Ferris' way at the end as two unbeaten Greater Spokane League basketball heavyweights gave it all they had. In a game of runs, the Saxons (5-0) ran off nine points in a row down the stretch Tuesday night at home to remain perfect with a 71-66 win over the Shadle Park Highlanders.

Ferris, Shadle in early GSL showdown

Slowly, but surely, five Ferris football players are gaining their basketball legs. Saturday's 75-54 win over Mead was an indicator. "We're rounding into basketball form," said Ferris coach Don Van Lierop. "It's taken a while to do that, but it makes sense."

LC pulls out victory

Prior to the first meeting between Greater Spokane League girls basketball favorites on Friday, Lewis and Clark's Jim Redmon expressed concern that the Tigers hadn't shot particularly well during three earlier wins. At Mead, they did so early and coupled with typical smothering LC defense, built a nine-point halftime lead.

Knights rule night

The Greater Spokane League wrestling match Thursday between East Valley and Central Valley wasn't decided until the next-to-last contest of the night. But in truth, the Knights' 29-28 victory was settled much earlier.

Back in the hunt

University wrestler Brian Owen never set about winning four state championships as his stated goal. "My goal was never to lose a match," he said.

It all comes together for LC

The messages kept coming – e-mails and phone calls from as far away as Connecticut and Katmandu – all with congratulations from the Lewis and Clark High School community. "There must have been 350," said an overwhelmed Tigers football coach Tom Yearout. "The extended LC family is pretty amazing."

Eagles in the GNL hunt

A year ago, four Great Northern League basketball teams qualified for Class 2A state and went a combined 0-8. This year six teams have the opportunity to improve upon that, including the defending league champion and state perennial West Valley boys and an Eagles girls team seeking its first bid since 1997.

Tigers had title in bag

TACOMA – Fancy travel bags as football accoutrements were not for Lewis and Clark. When the Tigers traveled four weekends out of five during the state playoffs, twice to the Tacoma Dome, they carried their belongings in plastic garbage sacks.

Terrific Tigers

TACOMA – When two teams of destiny squared off in the final football game of Gridiron Classic XIII, something had to give. Destiny's Darling in this case was Lewis and Clark as Taylor Eglet found wide-open Jordan Hanson for a 51-yard touchdown with 1 minute, 4 seconds remaining in the State 4A championship Saturday in the Tacoma Dome to rally the Tigers past Bothell 21-14 and become part of Greater Spokane League and school lore.

ACH completes the circle

TACOMA – Not 2 minutes into their state championship football showdown between Northeast League 1B rivals, Almira/Coulee-Hartline set the tone against Odessa. Josh Goodwin sprinted right, cut back against the grain and dashed 51 yards for the score with just 1 minute, 38 seconds elapsed in the game.

Tigers, Bothell tangle for title

In some respects, Lewis and Clark and Bothell are mirror images whose season journey culminates with tonight's showdown at 7:30 for the State 4A football championship at Gridiron Classic in the Tacoma Dome. They are similar in style and statistically close. The unbeaten Cougars shut out five of 13 opponents and have allowed only 91 points. LC blanked three, allowing but one touchdown in three playoff wins, and gave up 137 points in 12 games.

Warriors get second chance at Odessa

Four years ago, Brandon Walsh was terminated as the Almira/Coulee-Hartline football coach. The Warriors had endured a series of losing seasons at the Class 2B level (11-man football) and the coach was the logical target.

Back with vision

Alex Shaw didn't hesitate when asked how he elevated his play as Lewis and Clark's tailback during a scin- tillating run to the State 4A championship football game. "That's my O-line," he said. "I'm not going to try and take credit for something I didn't do."

GSL boys: Douglas’ varsity debut leads Shadle past CV

Anthony Brown had a game in one quarter and sophomore Robby Douglas had his varsity break-out performance to lead Shadle Park past Central Valley 60-47 in the featured game on Greater Spokane League basketball's opening night. Brown scored 10 points and pulled down six of his game-high 12 rebounds in the second quarter to turn a two-point deficit into an eight-point lead Tuesday night at CV.

No more cheering for Bothell

The coincidence was eerie. A year ago, Lewis and Clark football coach Tom Yearout sat in the Bothell cheering section during the State 4A championship game in Tacoma rooting on the son of a relative.

Shadle has shot at title

Shadle Park shooting guard Zack Humphrey is that rarity among Greater Spokane League basketball players – a fourth-year starter who has been one of the Highlanders' scoring leaders every season he's played. But it should have come as little surprise. Humphrey is a third-generation member immersed in the sport.

Odessa sets up All-Northeast B title game

Odessa had no answer for the arm – and escaping ability – of Tri-Cities Prep sophomore quarterback Will Hoppes. So the Tigers turned the game over to their offensive line, fullbacks and the feet of Jacob Schmidt to erase a two-touchdown halftime deficit and win Saturday's State 1B semifinal football game 58-44 at Albi Stadium.

ACH, Odessa in semifinal battles

The Northeast 1B League's two representatives in the State B-8 football semifinals will face similar problems. Odessa, which hosts Tri-Cities Prep Saturday at Albi Stadium, and Almira/Coulee-Hartline, which plays Lummi in the Tacoma Dome, must deal with prolific passing teams.
