Shadle Park shoots past CV

Who do you guard? Central Valley chose Option A on Tuesday, but Shadle Park countered and beat the visiting Bears 67-48 with Option B. Freshman Anthony Brown, who's had his moments as a varsity neophyte for the Highlanders, burned the Bears with 11 first-quarter points, hitting 5 of 6 shots.

Knights, Titans rally to repeat

Three area schools with wrestling-rich traditions were staring at huge deficits and impending defeat late in their final matches of the Washington Dream Duals at East Valley HS on Saturday. Although defending 2A state champion Lakeside came up short, it was never-say-die for both University and East Valley, who rallied improbably to earn repeat championships.

Ferris creates four-way tie for 1st

In a boys basketball game that had 22 lead changes or ties, it seems fitting, if not inevitable, that Friday's Ferris-North Central outcome would produce a multiple tie for first place in the Greater Spokane League. Visiting Ferris handed the Indians their first league loss, 55-51 in a game that turned on long-range marksmanship, including back-to-back 3-point baskets by reserve Erick Cheadle. It left those two teams, plus Central Valley and Gonzaga Prep, tied with a loss apiece.

U-Hi wins Battle of the Bone

Elliott Nay set the tone and University retained the Bone, but Central Valley gave partisans in the din of a capacity crowd at U-Hi plenty to yell about anyway. U-Hi's 40-24 victory margin in the annual Battle of the Bone wrestling matchup was not indicative of the contest, which was tied at 24 with three individual contests remaining. The Titans won eight matches to CV's six.

Blood before basketball

When football season ended last fall, Gonzaga Prep players Houston and Michael Stockton were given the Bullpups decals from their helmets. They stuck them on the back window of their Grandpa Jack's truck. Jack Stockton roots openly for G-Prep, mindful he has other grandsons who are Ferris Saxons. A few days later, a Ferris decal showed up in the middle of them.

Coach praises victorious Titans

University High School basketball coach, Mark "Elvis" Stinson said last Friday's Stinky Sneaker Spirit game, is an amazing sport. "You have five people out there who need to know where they are at each moment," Stinson said. "It's tough to get flow with teammates who have practiced less than all year."

Prep tops another unbeaten

Sound defense coupled with a pair of inspired second-half individual efforts spurred Gonzaga Prep past a Greater Spokane League boys basketball unbeaten for the second time in four days. After beating Ferris on the road last Friday, the Bullpups (9-3, 4-1) edged Shadle Park 55-52 Tuesday at home to knock the Highlanders (8-4, 4-1) from a share of first place with North Central.

U-Hi girls, CV boys take wins

What began and ended as a barnburner turned in between on the talents of University's X-factor. Angie Bjorklund's scoring, rebounding and, perhaps, more impressively her magical passing, spurred the Titans past rival Central Valley 69-58 Friday in the opener of the Stinky Sneaker spirit game.

Win puts CV closer to playoffs

Central Valley wrestlers on Wednesday took a major step toward a fourth straight appearance in the Greater Spokane League high school championship final four playoffs. The Bears defeated Mead 35-30 and need only one victory to assure themselves second place, at least, in the American Division of the league.

CV, WV boys aim for better shooting

Central Valley and West Valley boys basketball teams experienced similar results during early-season losses to fellow Greater Spokane League contenders and respective 4A and 3A playoff rivals. The Bears (8-2, 2-1) were beaten Tuesday night 43-29 by Ferris which is off to an 11-0 start. It was only the second setback this year for CV and the first against a GSL foe.

Riverside’s Spackman grows into formidable wrestler

Robert Spackman remembers having to cut weight to compete in a national wrestling tournament. He was age 12 and trying to make 65 pounds. "It's kind of funny, too," the Riverside senior said. "It was harder for me because I was already so small."

Ferris adjusts to turn back Central Valley

Denied a favorite facet of its offense Tuesday, Ferris' boys basketball players focused differently in order to remain undefeated. Unable to run, the Saxons (11-0, 3-0) parlayed patience and defense into a 43-29 victory at Central Valley in an early Greater Spokane League showdown between league contenders

Busy week coming up for area high school teams

Following a holiday hiatus, everything Greater Spokane League seems to be happening all at once for Spokane Valley high school sports teams. Thursday night, Central Valley wrestlers lost to East Valley, and next Wednesday faces another unbeaten – Mead – in two of three matches that will determine champion of the rugged Greater Spokane League American Division.

Indians prove their mettle

North Central proved that it has what it takes Friday in a tense contest, the outcome of which hinged on contributions by role players. The Indians (9-1 overall, 2-0 Greater Spokane League) continued to assert themselves by defeating West Valley 50-47 in overtime, nearly a duplication of their basketball win over the Eagles (7-2, 1-1) earlier this year.

East Valley gets big help from smallest wrestlers

East Valley's three smallest wrestlers came up big as the Knights came from behind for a 39-21 victory over Central Valley in a match of unbeaten teams in the rugged Greater Spokane League's American Division. The trio won the night's final seven bouts to wipe out a 21-9 deficit, none more vital than the two-point decisions by 103-pound junior Kyle Hunter and 112-pound sophomore Anthony Rivera that assured the outcome.

Teaming up for NC

Like entertainers Brooks & Dunn or clothiers Abercrombie & Fitch, North Central basketball has its own inseparable duo, Beal & Neil. Point guard Eric Beal and post Damal Neil have been intrinsically linked since grade school. And if the Indians are to end a state appearance drought that has surpassed half a century the duo will be a major reason why.

Galloway leads Saxons past Knights

A little improvisation by Jenna Galloway came at an opportune time for victorious Ferris as Greater Spokane League basketball began for real on Tuesday. Galloway found an open lane following an inbounds pass, scored a clutch basket with 15 seconds left and the Saxons (4-4, 1-0) went on to beat East Valley 44-41 in the taut girls game.

Titans take tourney championship

In some respects, University's championship of last weekend's Tri-State wrestling tournament at North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene was more impressive than its share of the title a year ago. True, the Titans scored fewer points – 152.5 – than the 189.5 of last year when they tied with Lake Stevens. And they didn't have a champion, when last year they had two.

Tigers saddle Mustangs with loss

Five Greater Spokane opponents who have played Lewis and Clark's girls basketball juggernaut in preseason games this year need not feel alone. The Tigers (6-0), who have beaten the GSL quintet by an average of 37 points per game, ran roughshod over a visiting state perennial in like fashion.

Girls provide night of surprises

The Greater Spokane League basketball preliminaries are over and the slate is wiped clean for league play that begins for real in January. But Friday night's results that included four girls surprises – not the least of them Rogers' 39-35 victory over Mt. Spokane ending a 69-game losing streak – bore out early assessments by girls coaches.

Bantams make University sweat out win

Perhaps Clarkston's youth deceived or University wrestling coach Don Owen underestimated the Bantams a bit when he held out some of his regulars in their National Division Greater Spokane League showdown. Clarkston, which eventually lost 45-24 to the defending State 4A champions, turned out to be every bit the contender as in the past two seasons when it finished among the GSL's top four teams.
