Squat’s group made big leap

Linda Sheridan's core message during her storied Shadle Park coaching career never deviated. She told her girls that they could be anything they wanted. Risk it, she would say. Trust. Don't be afraid to fail. Success will follow, not only in athletic competition, but in life. The girls bought in.

Mead surges to Crossover title

If Spokane's annual Crossover Classic volleyball tournament was a preview of coming attractions, it promised several postseason blockbusters. Central Valley rules line in win over U-Hi

Central Valley football coach Rick Giampietri will have a tough decision to make, singling out one lineman for a weekly team award. Bullpups’ Hardan finds double duty suits her fine

Although she's a third-year starting volleyball player at Gonzaga Prep, Liz Hardan is plowing new ground as both the setter and, at times, as a hitter. "I get to do both and it's exciting because I've never been a hitter before," Hardan said before quickly recanting. "I started out as a right side in U-12. Does that count?"

Greasy Pig battle will be Friday

It may be Greasy Pig week, but there's more at stake than district bragging rights and a trophy when University travels to Central Valley on Friday for football. The Titans (3-3 overall) and Bears (4-2) have identical 3-2 records in the Greater Spokane League. The winner will be in position to challenge for a top-three 4A league finish.

Mt. Spokane girls remain unbeaten

When the season began, those associated with the Mt. Spokane girls cross country program had no illusions of winning a third-straight Greater Spokane League championship, let alone hopes of another undefeated season. But the iron-willed Wildcats, with mostly new runners and a new coach, is almost there following their 24-33 triumph over Mead (8-2), stunning mainly because of its ease. Both teams beat West Valley (2-9).

Andersen lifts Shadle over U-Hi

Maybe it was the peanut butter and chocolate PowerBar she ate before the volleyball match. More likely it was the energy she fed off of from her teammates. Whatever the reason, Stacy Andersen's adrenaline surge sparked Shadle Park to a four-game victory over University and kept it tied for third place with Mt. Spokane in the Greater Spokane League, one win away from clinching a playoff berth.

Panthers leg one out with star RB Jessen hobbled

LC presses past Shadle

Maybe it was the storied rivalry between teams with successful histories that brought out the best in Lewis and Clark and Shadle Park's volleyball teams. Certainly, in the opinion of LC coach Julie Yearout, the match brought out the eye of the Tigers in their 25-16, 29-27, 25-19 victory at LC's Hunter Fieldhouse that kept them in second place behind Mead in the Greater Spokane League.

Couple seek players for 23U fastpitch

After they coached local select girls fastpitch softball players, including their daughters, for 11 summers, you'd think Duane and LaVonne Schreiber would be ready for a break. Their youngest daughter, Cassie, who pitched and played first base for East Valley, had completed her high school career. "With her not playing in school anymore, I thought we were done," Duane Schreiber said. "I'm a glutton for punishment."

Pullman’s Jones takes one for team

Everyone wants to be the football hero and Jeff Jones, no exception, had his moment in the spotlight last year at quarterback for Great Northern League champion Pullman.
