Shootout again decides Titans versus Bullpups game

University's girls soccer team won its showdown, but actually lost ground Wednesday in the Greater Spokane League. U-Hi (4-0) before Friday's home match against winless Clarkston, defeated Gonzaga Prep in a shootout 2-1 to remain unbeaten.

Mead, Mt. Spokane unbeaten

The only thing certain about Greater Spokane League girls cross country this year has been its unpredictability. Intangibles such as injury, incoming youth and reliance on pack efforts rather than surefire front runners served to knock preseason forecasts into a cocked hat from the outset.

Season starts much the same for all but WV

The 2005 Greater Spokane League football season is in many ways similar, eerily, to last year for Valley teams. At least last week's scores had a familiar ring. East Valley, 0-2 prior to its 2004 game with Central Valley, won 28-13, that began a string in which the Knights won six of their final seven league games.

Mead stands alone at top after sweeping LC

In the eyes of volleyball coach Judy Kight, Mead's three-game sweep of Lewis and Clark in a Greater Spokane League showdown between first-place teams may not have been particularly aesthetic. But she couldn't fault the panic-free effort of her Panthers, which made the 25-16, 25-17, 25-20 win on the road against the Tigers seem easier than it was.

O’Reilly back in the running at Highlander

Of the seasons, fall has been the cruelest for Mt. Spokane star Megan O'Reilly during a superb four-year distance career. O'Reilly is a two-time 3,200-meter champion and six-time medalist in state track during the spring.

Transfer gives Lakeside boost in GNL title hunt

Kia Gibson came home and Lakeside volleyball is glad she did. The 5-foot-11 middle blocker was part of a summer basketball buzz as one of two Greater Spokane League transfers into the Great Northern League.

Mt. Spokane’s boys edge field

A four-way cross country meet can scarcely finish closer. But in the end, the minuscule point differentials went Mt. Spokane's way. The Wildcats boys (3-0) won two 26-29 victories, over North Central (2-1) and host Central Valley (0-3), during a 3-0 Greater Spokane League start. Also, NC slipped past Central Valley 27-28 in a race that had all three coaches raving.

Winning lineage

The first time Jon Knight recognized the distance running potential of his cousin, Nick Atwood, the two were on a mountain hike together. "We backpacked up an 8,000-foot peak in Montana and I was not in bad shape," the North Central cross country coach recalled. "Nick was literally running away from me. I think that really encouraged him to get into running."

Prep rallies, beats EV

Pssst! In case no one was paying attention, Gonzaga Prep's No. 12 will run the football. For a quarter, the East Valley Knights weren't, and junior quarterback Max Manix shredded them for 189 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the second quarter to lead the Bullpups to a stunning 34-17 triumph.

Despite loss, WV coach confident

Since 1998, West Valley's last winning season and only the second since the late 1980s, the Eagles have won a total of seven football games and been winless three times. Craig Whitney, in his second year as head coach, has vowed to be an agent of change and from the results of their season opener, there is reason for hope.

Who makes whom?

It is volleyball's equivalent to the age-old question about the chicken and the egg. Does a setter make the hitter, or vice versa? Opinion varies.

Ingraham tops Rogers in offensive showdown

Two football teams with similar pasts squared off to begin their 2005 seasons. Ingraham, from Seattle, has not had a winning season since capturing the Metro League's only public high school state championship in 1989. The Rogers Pirates had fared little better. But this year is different for the Rams, who have high expectations in their division of the Seattle league.

U-Hi opener outcome anybody’s guess up to end

The end result for University's football team was not dissimilar to last year's season-opening loss to Lake City – 31-7 last season, 29-9 on Wednesday. There were a couple of big differences, however. Unlike last year, when the Titans trailed 10-0 in the first quarter and 31-0 after three, the outcome this time was in doubt until a blocked punt with 6:14 left in the game turned the tide.

Rangers take title in ‘storybook season’

It was fitting that the championship game between two Spokane Valley Baseball Midget League unbeatens took two extra innings to complete. The game came down to pitching depth and, in its dramatic conclusion, to a two-out wild pitch that scored Armando Garza to give Realty Rangers (14-0) a 4-3 eighth-inning triumph over Gibson's Nursery (13-1).
