Bears continue undefeated season

One down, two to go for unbeaten Central Valley in its quest for the school's first Greater Spokane League soccer championship. The Bears last week defeated Mt. Spokane. Friday and Wednesday they face East Valley and Ferris, two other teams in the four-team chase for the title.

CV’s Vela scores with a little help from his friends

Youth aside, Central Valley junior soccer player Jay Vela has been one of the league's most prolific scorers over the past two years. Vela has scored in every Greater Spokane League match and shares the scoring lead with 10 goals, 13 overall.

EV rebounds, beats Wildcats

Soccer is a game of non-stop action often with little to show for it on the scoreboard – other than the aesthetics of a well-played contest. Teams get goals when rare opportunities arise – and East Valley's Ryan Orwick did just that. He corralled a ball that had ricocheted off the goal crossbar Wednesday to defeat Mt. Spokane 2-1 in Greater Spokane League boys action.

Central Valley outlasts Wildcats

A game of cat and mouse between Greater Spokane League soccer unbeatens Central Valley and Mt. Spokane was settled in one relatively brief 5-minute second-half flurry. The visiting Bears (7-1-1, 6-0), who had fallen behind 3 minutes earlier, scored twice, a minute apart, for a 2-1 victory that left them alone atop a taut league race.

Strong on the mound

When Lewis and Clark baseball coach Dexter Davis first coached Eric Barge after his freshman year, he saw a tall, slender athlete who could hit and throw. "I didn't need any more information," he said. "I liked the makeup."

Saxons top Wildcats, but it sure wasn’t pretty

The outcome of a Greater Spokane League baseball game billed as one between teams pitting good pitching against good hitting in truth was scarcely a product of either. Much of the scoring on both sides in Ferris' dramatic comeback 8-7 victory over Mt. Spokane came from the rubble of myriad walks, hit batsmen, errors and wild pitches.

WV freshmen mark starts

Greater Spokane League baseball has seemingly always been a 50-50 proposition, and for Valley teams this year is no exception. After spring break doubleheaders, eight of the league's 14 teams are either 3-2 or 2-3 and with 13 league games remaining, only a couple of teams appear to hold an upper hand.

Wildcats remain unbeaten

Mt. Spokane pitchers faced an ominous test Wednesday against a Central Valley team that was averaging more than 11 hits and 11 runs per game. They passed with high marks, beating the Bears 2-1 in 10-innings and 7-1 at CV.

CV baseball wins first four games, shares GSL lead

When a coach returns to a sport, attempting to put his stamp on it after a long absence, there are always revelations. For new Central Valley baseball coach Barry Poffenroth, that revelation has come in the form of outfielder Ryan Maynes.

Van Leirop will return to Ferris

Don Van Leirop will return next year to be the Ferris boys head basketball coach. Van Lierop was reinstated in a vote by a seven-person panel following a long mediation session Friday. He had been the head coach for three years before his contract was not renewed by the district a little less than a year ago.

Best may be yet to come

Mt. Spokane's Cameron Joslyn, like his brother before him, is a late bloomer. You wouldn't know it by the stats he put up last year when the then 5-foot-11, 150-pound pitcher went 5-2 and had the Greater Spokane League's best earned run average at 0.57.

Shadle fights through

Shadle Park's boys soccer team was like the boxer who absorbs blow after blow only to somehow stay on his feet and deliver a Rocky-esque knockout punch before the final bell. As a result, the Highlanders (5-0, 3-0 with eight points) inexplicably remained unbeaten following Wednesday night's 2-1 shootout victory over host University.

Washington-led Saxons eye crown

Ferris soccer player Avery Washington, one of four All-Greater Spokane League first-team choices returning this year, has been involved with the sport for as long as he can remember. Though it initially was not, he said, the choice his father Wayne would have made.

Senior clinches state victory for LC

When the State 4A girls basketball tournament trophy game against Greater Spokane League rival University came down to free throws, it was fitting that Lewis and Clark's shooter was departing senior Briann January. One of two seniors for the Tigers – Bryce Bohlen – is the other, January made both with 5.6 seconds remaining, giving the team a 47-45 win and 26-3 record, best in school history, and the third-place plaque.

Lewis and Clark edges University for third place

TACOMA – The difference between third and sixth places at the State 4A girls basketball tournament between Lewis and Clark and University came down to a loose ball scramble between each team's senior star. Titan Jami Bjorklund was whistled for a foul with 6 seconds remaining in the game and Briann January made both free throws for a 47-45 LC victory in the fourth meeting between the team teams and final high school game between good friends.

U-Hi vs. LC, but not for title

TACOMA – University's hopes of a State 4A basketball championship went up in the smoke of a Snohomish 3-point shooting barrage. The Panthers made 10 of 22 shots from beyond the arc to hold off the Titans 58-52 and earn a date with Garfield in tonight's title game.

GSL teams take different routes to semis

TACOMA – State basketball is a matter of survival of the fittest and the Lewis and Clark Tigers came out of their melee against Prairie a 40-37 victor and essentially in one piece – if you discount the tooth Ula Tauala left on the court courtesy of a Falcon elbow. It was a physical contest left largely to the players' devices and the Tigers shot abysmally as a result. But they survived to play at 7 tonight in a State 4A semifinal against Garfield and are assured their second state trophy in three years.

University, Lewis and Clark win openers among talent-laden field

TACOMA – So far, so good for University and Lewis and Clark as they journey a State 4A girls basketball tournament highway fraught with potential roadblocks. On opening day in the Tacoma Dome, the U-Hi Titans dispatched Redmond 70-43, not surprising except perhaps by its margin. The LC Tigers, despite a shaky start common to tournament openers, handled outmanned Central Kitsap 55-43.

Gonzaga Prep put parts together to make state

When Mike Haugen came back aboard as Gonzaga Prep's boys basketball coach, he converted Jake Sayman from guard to forward because of a knee injury that altered his mobility. It wasn't the only change at G-Prep with Haugen at the helm following a two-year retirement. The Bullpups went from 7-18, albeit a regional qualifier last year, to this year's 18-9 record and berth in today's State 4A tournament in Tacoma.
