"Bone Appetit," read the shirts worn by University High fans at the Battle of the Bone. And the Titans feasted on Central Valley, 61-3 in the most lopsided wrestling match in the 10-year history of the trophy match.

Titans pick apart Central Valley

Privately, Central Valley wrestling coach John Owen worried that his team might be shut out by district rival University, a notion that seemed unlikely given the quality of several athletes in his program. With the 61-3 shellacking the Titans (7-0) put on his Bears (5-2) on rivalry night in the Greater Spokane League, however, Owen's fears were nearly realized.

When Central Valley and Mt. Spokane met with the final berth at stake in next week's four-team Greater Spokane League wrestling championship playoffs, the outcome figured to be anybody's guess. Titans take trophy, games

There were plenty of Prince Charmings in this Cinderella story as University swept the Stinky Sneaker trifecta over Central Valley for the second year in a row. The Titans not only won the Sneaker trophy for spirit with its "Shoerella" takeoff on Cinderella, but also won both the boys' and girls' high school basketball games in front of a jam-packed audience in the U-Hi gym.

Ferris uses hot start, fast finish to top WV

The Ferris-West Valley boys basketball game between teams with the Greater Spokane League's best records proved what coaches have been saying all year: No lead is safe when GSL teams meet. But the home-standing Saxons (10-2, 4-1) took it to extremes, losing a 17-point first-half lead before recovering for a 65-54 victory Tuesday night in a game important to both.

East Valley and University wrestling teams, both 5-0, wrapped up the championships of their respective Greater Spokane League divisions on Wednesday and earned berths in the league's end-of-season four-team high school championship playoffs. Titans walk away in Sneaker

Unlike last year, University had no problems finding its shot Friday night in front of a capacity Stinky Sneaker house during a convincing 68-44 victory over rival Central Valley in Greater Spokane League play. The Titans hit 68 percent of their first-half attempts, five of them 3-pointers. They parlayed six successive turnovers into points for a 16-2 lead midway through the first quarter.

U-Hi boys make certain

When University and Central Valley last met, at the start of the boys basketball season, the Titans squandered a 12-point halftime lead and ultimately lost in overtime. "We just let them stick around too long," said 6-foot-5 Titans post Calvin Jurich. "This time we knew what we had to do and closed the door."

Stinky Sneaker Saturday at U-Hi

In the spirit of the basketball season, Friday is the annual Stinky Sneaker game when University hosts Central Valley. Along with the distraction for the four teams playing amid the sold-out bedlam of the high school spirit competition and trophy chase, much is at stake for them during plain old Greater Spokane League basketball games.

The look of a winner

The physical resemblance between father and son was striking. When Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls wrestler Levi Jones and his coach/father Scott stood face-to-face deep in discussion at last weekend's Pacific Northwest Classic tournament at University, it was like watching someone see his image in a mirror. "A lot of people are saying that more and more," said Scott Jones of the uncanny similarity in appearance between the two as Levi has matured.

Practice makes perfect as Wildcats trip up Indians

The good news for Mt. Spokane, early in its Greater Spokane League girls basketball win Tuesday at North Central, was that the team was overwhelming on the offensive boards. The bad news was that for every offensive rebound – and there were 18 alone in the first half – there was a corresponding missed layin.

Murphy musters big 3-pointer as Gonzaga Prep rallies past Titans

Gonzaga Prep's Ryan Murphy is the first to admit that he's a basketball player in a football player's body. But the burly Bullpups player knows his way around the court as readily as the gridiron. When it comes to making a clutch play, no one in the Greater Spokane League is better.

Mt. Spokane battles Mead to the bitter end

A Greater Spokane League wrestling match in which as many as eight unbeatens or postseason veterans could potentially have wrestled each other promised plenty of intrigue. Mead and Mt. She’s happy to assist

Although the sport of basketball is often consumed by an emphasis on scoring, Lewis and Clark girls standout Briann January has never been so inclined. As far back as the eighth grade, when January played on a 26-0 Spokane league AAU basketball team, she would often pass up a shot in deference to her teammates.

A deep bench was the difference Tuesday as Gonzaga Prep's girls team handed North Central its first defeat, 60-44, to open the Greater Spokane League basketball season. When the home-standing Bullpups (6-2, 1-0) sent in their substitutes – Ashley Magee and Laura Christianson in particular – three minutes into the game, they produced a bevy of points during a first-quarter burst that created an 11-point lead the Indians (7-1, 0-1) never dented.
